#1: DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE:

THE STORY:

Raj Malhotra and Simran Singh (Shahrukh Khan and Kajol respectively) are young first generation British Indians brought up and living in London. Raj is the only child of wealthy Dharamvir Malhotra (Anupam Kher), who spoils his son excessively. Raj is a free-wheeling party boy, who is the first student at his tertiary institution to fail, something which is announced at his would-be graduation ceremony. Simran is the elder daughter of convenience store owner Chaudhry Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), who is a very conservative and typical Indian man whose only dream is to one day go back to his native Punjab. One day Raj tricks Baldev into selling him some beer after hours, making him very mad. Baldev is proud that he has managed to bring up his two daughters in a very traditional way; they respect his conservative outlook. Simran constantly dreams of her Prince Charming, a stranger who comes into her life and sweeps her off her feet, and writes about him in her diary.

However, a letter comes from Ajit, Baldev's best friend in India saying that his son, Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi), and Baldev's daughter, Simran, should marry each other, in accordance with a promise the two fathers had made to each other when their children were infants. Because of her "Prince Charming," Simran is a bit concerned. She has never seen Kuljeet before, but agrees to marry him out of respect for her father. However, before the wedding, she begs her father to allow her to go on a trip to Europe with her friends, her last chance to see the world before her marriage to a complete stranger and relocation to India. Even though he is generally very strict, Baldev relents and allows her to go, on the condition that she promises never to betray his trust.

During the trip, Simran bumps into Raj, who is also on a trip to Europe with some friends. After some initial misadventures, mainly due to disrespectful behaviour on the part of Raj, he falls in love with Simran. Only at their moment of parting at the railway station in London does Simran realize that she too has fallen in love with Raj.

Simran goes home and tells her mother (Farida Jalal) that she has fallen in love with someone else and cannot go through with her wedding to Kuljeet. Baldev overhears their conversation, and is furious that Simran broke her promise that she would never betray his trust. He is adamant that she will marry Kuljeet as planned, and they will leave for India as soon as possible.

Even though Simran does not want to marry Kuljeet, her family returns to Punjab. As it turns out, Kuljeet is an arrogant alpha male who takes pride in being a shikari (hunter) and boasts to his macho friends that he will engage in marital infidelity. Simran's mother tries to spare her daughter's feelings, but cannot stand up to her domineering husband.

Raj, however, does not give up so easily. He follows Simran to Punjab, meets her privately, and assures her that he will save her from the arranged marriage, and marry her with the consent of her father. As such, he refuses to elope with Simran because he wants her family to endorse their marriage, even though Simran's mother tries to force her savings into his hand so that he can elope and look after Simran.

Raj befriends Kuljeet and pretends to be a friend of the family. He helps with the wedding preparations and soon gains everyone's friendship and love. At the same time, Kuljeet's sister, Preeti (Mandira Bedi), falls in love with Raj, and things become complicated when Raj's father suddenly appears in India. By now, even Simran's father Baldev has been won over by Raj, though he thinks that Raj may be the boy from the beer incident.

However, everything comes crashing down when Baldev sees a photograph of Raj and Simran together when they were on their trip across Europe. He exposes Raj's true identity in front of everybody, slaps him, and angrily tells him to leave immediately, as Simran will marry Kuljeet regardless of what anybody thinks. As Raj leaves and is sitting at the railway station ready to leave Punjab, Kuljeet and his friends follow him and nearly beat him senseless with sticks for his deception. However, when Raj's father tries to intervene and Kuljeet and his friends beat him as well, Raj flies into a rage and single-handedly beats Kuljeet and his friends with a stick he has wrestled from Kuljeet's group. Baldev then stops Raj and tells him and his father to go on their way. Raj and his father accordingly board a train out of the village. However, as the train begins to pull out of the station, Simran tries to follow, and is stopped by Baldev. She begs him to let her go, and he eventually comes to his senses and realizes that no one loves his daughter as much as Raj does. He tells Simran to join Raj on the train, which she enthusiastically does.

#2 AWARA:

THE STORY:

Raj lives a life of poverty as a result of being estranged from his vindictive father, a wealthy district judge (played by Kapoor's real-life father Prithviraj Kapoor). Judge Raghunath threw Raj's mother out of the house years earlier on suspicion of infidelity. As a child, Raj befriends Rita in school, but Raj is removed from the school rolls while trying to maintain a job and Rita moves to another city. Even though they are separated, Rita remains in Raj's thoughts.

On the streets, Raj turns to a life of petty crime and finds a father-figure in Jagga (K. N. Singh). It is only many years later that Raj realizes that Jagga is the man responsible for his mother's estrangement. While planning a bank robbery with his friends, they realize they need an automobile. He snatches a woman's purse after she steps out of the car, but finds no keys, and pretends to pursue the thief to release suspicion from himself. After his elaborate act, he returns the purse to the woman, who is soon revealed to be Rita. Rita is now the warden of the Judge, who suspects that Raj is no good and eventually restricts Rita from seeing him. As soon as Raj realizes that Jagga is responsible for his mother's misery, he kills Jagga in a fit of rage and then attempts to kill the Judge. Due to these actions, Raj is brought to his own father's court, where Rita serves as his lawyer. In the end, Raj is sentenced to 3 years in prison for his crime, but Rita promises to wait for him.

GUIDE 1965

THE STORY:

Dev Anand stars as Raju, a freelance guide, who earns his living by taking tourists to historic sites. The movies starts with Raju being released from jail, and then the story runs in flashback. One day, a wealthy and aging archaeologist Marco comes to the city with his young wife Rosie (Waheeda Rehman) the daughter of a courtesan. Marco wants to do some research on the caves outside the city and hires Raju as his guide. He discovers a new cave and ignores Rosie.

While Marco devotes himself to the discovery of the cave, Raju takes Rosie on a tour and is captivated by her impetuous beauty. Raju learns about Rosie's background and how Rosie has achieved respectability as the wife of Marco but at a terrible cost. She has had to give up her passion of dancing since it is unacceptable to Marco. Meanwhile, Rosie tries to commit suicide by consuming poison. Marco, upon knowing the incidence returns from the caves to see Rosie and gets furious on Rosie after seeing her alive. He tells Rosie that her act of committing suicide was a drama, otherwise she would have consumed more sleeping pills so that she could really have died. On returning to Udaipur, Rosie discovers that Marco is having an affair with a native tribal girl. Rosie is mad at Marco, and again wants to end her life. But Raju calms her by saying that committing suicide is a sin, and that she should live to pursue her dream. She finally says good-bye to the relation of being the wife of Marco. But now she needs support and a place to live. It is here that Raju takes her to his home.

Rosie is considered a prostitute by Raju's community which leads to many problems including his mother and her brother insisting that Rosie be kicked out. Raju refuses and his mother leaves him. His friend and driver also falls out with him over Rosie. Raju loses his business and the entire town turns against him. Undeterred by these setbacks, Raju helps Rosie embark on a singing and dancing career. As she rises as a star, Raju becomes dissolute—gambling and drinking. Marco comes back on the scene. Trying to win Rosie back, he brings flowers and has his agent ask Rosie to release some jewelry which is in a safe deposit box. Raju, a bit jealous, does not want Marco to have contact with Rosie and forges Rosie's name on the release of the jewels. Rosie and Raju drift apart. Rosie learns of the forgery release and Raju is convicted of forgery, resulting in a two year sentence. On the day of his release, his mother and Rosie come to pick him up but they are told that he was released six months ago because of his good behaviour.

Upon his release Raju wanders alone. Despair, poverty, rags, hunger, loneliness, until he finds a wandering group of sadhus with whom he spends a night at a derelict temple in a small town. He sleeps and one of the itinerant holy men places a shawl upon him while he sleeps. The holy men leave. The next morning, a farmer (Bhola) finds Raju sleeping under the orange shawl. Bhola thinks Raju is a holy man. Bhola is having a problem with his sister because she refuses to marry. Raju impresses upon the woman the logic in taking a husband and she submits, which convinces Bhola that Raju is a swami (holy man). Impressed by this Bhola spreads the news through village. Raju is taken as the holy man for the village. The farmers bring gifts for him and start consulting him with their problems. Raju assumes the role of village holy man (Swami Ji) and engages in skirmishes with the local pandits. In telling a childhood story, Raju speaks of a holy man whose 12 day fast resulted in God's bringing rain to end a drought.

A drought and ensuing famine hit the region hard. Through miscommunication of a village fool, Raju's (Swami Ji) words are interpreted by villagers that he will fast for 12 days to end the drought. He finds himself trapped by villagers' belief. At first Raju opposes the idea, going as far as telling Bhola that he is just a human like any one of them and even worse a convict who has undergone trial and jail-term over a woman. But even the confession was not enough for the villagers to give up on their belief who quote the story of decoit Ratnakar who became Valmiki. He reluctantly begins the fast, although he does not believe that there is any relation between a man's hunger and rain. With the fast, Raju undergoes a spiritual transformation. As the fast goes on, his fame spreads. People by the thousands come to see him and take his blessings. An American journalist asks him whether he truly believes that his fast would bring rain, he smiles and says "These people have faith in me, and I have faith in their faith". Upon hearing his fame Rosie pays him a visit, so does his mother and his friend. He now has everything he has lost a long time back. His health starts falling, and he thinks about the meaning of his life. On one side there is Rosie, his Mother and a chance to get back to his past life and on the other side there is a noble cause to fast and hope for the rain. He gets enlightened by the concept that his past sins are washed away by his anguish and the Guide Raju he knew has died. And now the only thing that remains is the spiritual Raju, which is indestructible. He is reconciled with his mother, Rosie and the driver during his ordeal. He transcends this life. Amidst thunder clap and heavy downpour, his soul departs this earth while the crowd rejoices and his beloveds cry.

Notwithstanding with is sad end, the title of this movie Guide appears to have a message for mankind that from a simple Tourist Guide, Raju could transcend himself to become a Life Guide for the common man. It probably talks of a hope that a criminal, broken, used and depressed person can have by looking life from another perspective, where all that is past can be reconciled by what is present, though, may not be in absolute terms.

Some of heart-rendering songs and painful situations are depicted in this film of a happy-go-lucky Raju Guide whose life takes a turn of misery as finds himself lost in the pursuit of the worldly affairs, viz., money, his crave for the love of a woman, and liquor and gambling. Raju's confession to his secretary and the subsequent song, Din dhal jaye hai, Raat na jaye are sure to touch anyone's heart which will make the character of Raju Guide immortal for the ages to come.

#5: PAKEEZAH 1972

THE STORY:

This movie is about the tawaif Sahibjaan, (Meena Kumari), who is born to a blonde courtesan, Nargis (also Meena Kumari). After being spurned by her lover Shahabuddin's (Ashok Kumar) family, Nargis is driven to a graveyard where she gives birth to Sahibjaan secretly. Nargis dies during childbirth, and her sister, Nawabjaan, takes the child as her own. Sahibjaan was brought up by brothel madame Nawabjaan (Veena). Unable to break away from the vicious circle, Sahibjaan grows up and becomes a beautiful and popular dancer/singer. Forest ranger Salim Ahmed Khan (Raaj Kumar) is enthralled by Sahibjaan's beauty and innocence, and eventually convinces her to elope with him, which she does. But trials and tribulations await Sahibjaan as she is recognized by men wherever she goes in the company of Salim. When Salim re-names her "Pakeezah" (pure of heart) and takes her to a priest to be legally married, she refuses, and returns to the brothel. Salim eventually decides to marry someone else, and invites Sahibjaan to dance at his wedding; Sahibjaan agrees to this. During this event, the story reveals an exciting turn: Nawab recognises Shahabuddin, and calls him to witness the irony of the situation. His own daughter employed to dance and entertain his own family without his knowing.

Pakeezah took nearly 14 years to shoot because of a change in relationship between Meena Kumari and the director. Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi were married when Pakeezah was first conceived. Ashok Kumar was to have played the part of Salim, but the part was later played by Raaj Kumar. The character was changed from a businessman to a forest ranger to suit Raaj Kumar's more muscular physique. Both the film's composer Ghulam Mohammed and cinematographer Josef Wirsching died during the period. Later, composer Naushad stepped in and composed the film's background music as well as its title track. Over a dozen of Bombay's top cinematographers pitched in when they had time; they however managed to maintain its uniform look.

Due to a variety of different factors, Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi parted ways and the film remained incomplete. It was only when Nargis and Sunil Dutt saw the rushes of the film that they convinced Meena Kumari to complete it. It was mostly shot in Kamal Amrohi Studios, Mumbai.

Meena Kumari was very ill when filming resumed and can be seen lying down in most of her scenes. For the dance sequences, Padma Khanna was used as a body double and can be seen in the long-shots. Meena Kumari died weeks after the film was released. The film, which had been declared a flop when first released, became a success and achieved cult status.

Pakeezah made news during the Filmfare Awards in 1971 when Pran refused to accept his award for Be-Imaan because he felt that Ghulam Mohammed deserved a posthumous Filmfare award for his songs in Pakeezah.

#6: MUGHAL E AZAM: 1960

THE STORY:

The film re-tells a popular Indian tale, which was previously filmed as Loves of a Mughal Prince (1928) and Anarkali (1953). It is loosely based on an episode in the life of the Mughal Prince Salim, who went on to become the Emperor Jahangir (r. 1608 - 1627). In the movie, the great conqueror Akbar (played by Prithviraj Kapoor) and his Rajput wife, Jodha Bai (played by Durga Khote) have a son - the weak and pleasure-loving Salim - played by Dilip Kumar. Salim falls in love with Anarkali (Madhubala), a court-dancer. He wants to marry her and arranges secret meetings between Anarkali and himself. However, the jealous Bahaar, a dancer of a higher rank, wants the crown of India and she attempts to make the prince love her so she may ascend to queenship. She exposes the love between the prince and the dancer. Salim pleads for Anarkali's hand, but his father objects and throws Anarkali into prison. Despite imprisonment, Anarkali refuses to reject Salim.

Salim rebels against his father, is defeated in battle, and is sentenced to death. Anarkali pleads for his life in exchange for her own, and is condemned to be walled up alive. However, it is revealed that Akbar owed a favor to Anarkali's mother, since she informed him of the birth of his son. Anarkali's mother takes advantage of this, and begs for her daughter's life. The emperor relents, and arranges for Anarkali's secret escape into exile. Unfortunately, it is still announced that Anarkali was killed, and Salim is heartbroken.

Most tales of Salim and Anarkali end with the death of the latter, even though the movie version is slightly more optimistic. However, Salim is still left to believe that Anarkali is dead and the lovers are separated for the rest of their lives.

#9: ARADHNA 1969

THE STORY:

'Aradhana' (Worship) had all the makings of a sob story of with the female protagonist Vandana (Sharmila Tagore) left to fend for herself when her lover Arun (Rajesh Khanna), an airforce pilot dies in a crash and she is left literally holding the baby. A pregnant Vandana decides to defy societal norms and give birth to her baby. She intends to give the baby up for adoption and then go ahead and adopt him subsequently, so as to escape censure from society. But everything goes haywire as her baby son, Suraj is adopted by a rich family, the Saxenas. On learning the truth, Mr Saxena (Abhi Bhattacharya) convinces her that her son would be better off with them and coaxes her to join the family as a governess so that she can be close to her son. But fate plays yet another cruel trick. One of the relatives of the family, Shyam (Manmohan) tries to molest her. In his bid to save his governess, the young Suraj accidently kills Shyam. In her bid to save her son, Vandana takes the blame upon herself and goes off to serve a long term in jail. Years later, when she is released, she is unable to locate the family and her son. Then she accepts the offer of the friendly jailor (Madan Puri) and goes to live with him and help him bring up his daughter, Renu (Farida Jalal). In a strange play of coincidences, Renu is in love with an airforce pilot herself, who turns out to be Suraj (Rajesh Khanna, again). Fate brings her back face to face with her son.
The film begins with Vandana being sentenced by the court and then unwinds as a flashback as the story of Vandana and Arun unfolds, their first meeting, their love affair, their decision to secretly marry in a Shiva temple, Arun's subsequent death, Vandana being turned away by Arun's family and, finally with the birth of Suraj and her life with the Saxenas till that fateful day. The first half of the film is predominantly romantic with Arun wooing and winning over the heart of Vandana. Some of the film's best songs are in this section like 'Mere Sapnon Ki Rani', 'Kora Kagaz Tha Man Mera', 'Gunguna Rahein Hain Bhawrein' and the sensuous 'Roop Tera Mastana.' Equally noteworthy is the Lata Mangeshkar solo 'Chanda Hai Tu' and SD Burman's 'Kahe Ko Roye'. Burman dada was in full form in this film and these numbers still have that evocative magic for Hindi film music lovers.

Like most of Shakti Samanta's films, 'Aradhana' too had a strong story line and a very well written out screenplay, thanks to Sachin Bhowmick. No wonder that the film became a golden jubilee hit (completed 50 weeks) in most urban centres. The two star performers, Khanna and Tagore, were in great form in this emotional opus. Khanna was his usual charming self as Arun and then doubling up as Suraj. Tagore too essayed the graduation from a young girl to an old woman effortlessly. It was a calculated risk that she took and it paid off for her handsomely. The chemistry between both stars was most evident in the 'Roop Tera Mastana' number, which was picturised quite sensuously by the director, rare for those times. But this was a movie which was high on drama, emotion, superb music, good acting and terrific direction. All the masala for a mainstream Hindi movie was there in the movie and in just the right doses. Shakti Samanta was in his prime and managed to weld all the talent that was available to him perfectly and tell a moving tale about love and sacrifice. A classic of its times, the magic still endures. Khanna may be a has been these days, Tagore may have semi retired from films, Shakti Samata is no more and neither is SD Burman or Kishore Kumar, but this movie will always remain as a testimony of their talent. Their 'aradhana' to the craft of cinema paid off superbly in this 'Aradhana'.
