Recognizing Signs of Stroke

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall. The people around her offered to call paramedics but she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. She assured everyone that she was fine. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, the woman went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

The woman's husband called later that evening telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital. A couple of hours later, news broke out that the woman had passed away. It seems she had suffered a stroke at the BBQ.

Had the people around her known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps she would be with us today. Some people may not die from a stroke, in which case they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke ... totally. He said the key is for people to know how to recognize the signs of a stroke and bringing that person to a medical care facility.

Unfortunately, most people don't know the signs of a stroke. This lack of awareness spells disaster. When people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke, the stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage.

Any common person can now recognize a stroke by asking four simple questions (STRT)

S - ask the person to SMILE.

T -ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) i.e. "It is sunny out today.

R - ask the person or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

T - ask the person to STICK OUT YOUR TONGUE.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

About the tongue, ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

What Causes A Stroke?

A stroke or cardiovascular accident is a type of cardiovascular condition that affects the blood vessels in charge of supplying blood to the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel, which carries vital oxygen and nutrients to the brain, is either blocked by a clot or ruptures.

The blood flow is interrupted. As a result part of the brain does not get sufficient oxygen and blood. The nerve cells in the affected area are unable to function and die almost immediately because they are deprived of oxygen. When the nerve cells cannot function, the parts of the body they control are also affected and cannot function correctly either.
