Guyanese Broadcaster, Consultant Rafiq Khan passed away this morning (October 10, 2014) in Jamaica. He was the former General Manager of Radio Demerara and worked with UNESCO in the Caribbean. Rafiq was not only concerned about standards in Guyana’s Broadcasting Sector but in the country. He remarked in tribute to another Broadcaster Terence Holder “Is anyone even noticing that the philistines are taking over our city and our country?”

I remembered his early morning radio program. Hindi songs to wake up by. In the days of affordable Philips radio, Indian women listened to his chosen songs while they prepared the meals for the men off to work on the sugar plantations and children off to schools. Quiet days with striving for the future.

The Philistines have taken the city and country's airwaves.
