Questions for the new Govt on this  salary increases fiasco

LettersDear Editor,

In an incontrovertible period of economic slowdown in Guyana, the new Granger-led A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Government’s decision to increase their salaries by over 50 per cent while other public servants got less than five per cent has in one fell swoop converted itself from “the incompetent” to “the incompetent and heartless”.

In an effort to provide some clarity, I believe the more important question is: what is the cost of the new Granger led APNU-AFC Government to the treasury? With reference to the forgoing, I pose the following simple questions to President Granger and the APNU-AFC Government on behalf to ALL of the people of Guyana:

  1. Will your increase mean higher productivity? (if the answer is ‘yes’ then it means that for the last six months you have not been working as hard as you could have been and if the answer is ‘no’ then you do not deserve an increase.

  2. Are you saying that the only way a country can have Ministers who are not corrupt is by having a large salary or a salary that is MORE THAN 11 TIMES the average salary? If the answer is ‘yes’ please show me where this was posted in your manifesto and contract with the electorate.

  3. Can you account for your failure to deliver on your manifesto promise of 20 per cent increase to public servants, Police, Teachers, and Nurses while giving yourself a 50+ per cent increase?

  4. Since “public service” is intended to be a “service” to the “public” can the President and ALL the Ministers publish their previous declared taxable income which will show how many of them ever earned more than their current salary?

  5. How do you justify the President and the Attorney General’s salaries being tax free?

Sincerely,

Charles S. Ramson

Attorney

VP, the government is giving PPP free ammunition. Not only the PPP. Resentment against the ministers' salary increase is growing within civil society too. The Red Thread women's group will protest outside the Parliament Buildings next Thursday. The Walter Rodney Youth Movement says the salary increases "will add a bitter taste to the mouths of many supporters of the government since it strays away from the many messages preached during the campaign season that dealt with real change, transparency and accountability."

Red Thread and WRYM are not PPP friends.

The maan Granger himself said that the economy was in decline since last year.  What a time to give yourself big raises!  It looks like they start the Friday nite parties based on "oil" potential.  You know too bad Burnham was a dictator, he would put Granger to shame.  Granger is a dunce, he knows nothing about government maybe that's why he running his rass around the globe so as not to be at Cabinet meetings.

Granger is traveling mostly to rally international support for Guyana in the current border dispute. I see nothing wrong with that especially since he's doing an excellent job in this regard. You expect the man to hug up MadBurro like the PPP?
Mars

Since the AFC/APNU became the Government, they have been robing the country blindly, in the guise of salary increases, redecorating their homes and offices, travelling for the purpose of begging Guyanese to come back home and give them their money, fake audits  and appointing party hacks to jobs they cannot do. In the mean time afro Guyanese are getting poorer and more of them are unemployed, but they are happy to be.

Red Tread  and social justice NGOs see what the PPP had done to the people at the grass roots level and say it as it is, thus they are the PPP enemy.

That does not make it right what the PNC is doing.
