President Granger to set the pace

The Queen’s Baton relay is set to commence it journey in Guyana today with His Excellency, President David Granger set to start the Relay at 08:00hrs; President Granger will then hand over to the Honourable Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo.
According to a release from the Guyana Olympic Association, other dignitaries who will be part of the Queen’s Baton Rely include Minister Nicolette Henry, Minister Sydney Allicock, Speaker of the National Assembly, Mayor of Georgetown, Commissioner of Police, Chief of Staff and Members of the Diplomatic Corps.
The Baton will also be carried by members of Sports Associations and other organisations. The Relay starts at State House, goes south to the Cenotaph, north to Umana Yana, east past Police Headquarters to Camp Street, south on Camp Street to Quamina Street, east on Quamina Street to Thomas Street, south on Thomas Street to Church Street, east on Church Street to Vlissengen Road, into the Botanic Gardens, west on Regent Street to Avenue of the Republic, south on Avenue of the Republic to Croal Street, west to Stabroek Market Square, around the Square then east to Parliament Buildings, east along Brickdam, finishing at the Square of the Revolution.
After lunch, it then goes over to the Leonora Stadium where it will be greeted by members of the community, tassa drummers and a masquerade band.
Tomorrow, the Baton travels to Kaieteur Falls before making its way to Surama and Annai where it will be greeted with sport and cultural presentations.
Along the way it will be touched and photographed by Guyanese of all walks of life and it will experience various facets of our rich history and culture. Guyanese are invited to come out and #MeetTheBaton #ShareTheDream.
The Queen’s Baton Relay is a Games tradition that celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspires community pride and excites people about the world-class festival of sports and culture to come.
The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II that calls the Commonwealth’s athletes to come together in peaceful and friendly competition. The CG2018 Relay will be the longest and the most accessible ever, not just passing through, but spending quality time in each community it visits.
Starting on 13th March 2017 at Buckingham Palace, the Baton will travel on an epic 388-day journey through all nations and territories of the Commonwealth.
The Queen’s Baton will arrive on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4th April 2018, where Her Majesty, or a representative, will remove the message from the Baton and read it aloud to officially open the Games.
