President Bharrat Jagdeo today received the Official List of Electors from Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Dr. Steve Surujbally paving the way for the announcement of national elections.

Subsequent to receiving the document President Bharrat Jagdeo at a press conference today said he will announce the date within one week.

GECOM’s Chairman in an invited comment to the Government Information Agency (GINA) said the Commission is very much ready.

β€œWe are inexorably on the path to an elections, the president now has the Official List of Electors (OLE), the final voters list, in his possession he will now call a date. We will have something called nomination day in which the parties that are prepared to contest for high office will, according to whatever day the President sets, will then register to vie for elections,” Dr. Surujbally said.

President Bharrat Jagdeo today informed that a date for the holding of the 2011 national and regional elections will be officially announced within a week. He was at the time speaking at a press conference at his office, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.

The President, read from a letter to him by the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Steve Surujbally, which stated that the official list of electors has been prepared in accordance with the provision of the National Registration Act, Chapter 1908, the Registration of the People Act Chapter 103, and the Election Laws (Amendment) Act.

The letter further stated that the official List of Electors (OLE) has been duly certified by Commissioner of Registration, Chief Elections Officer, Gocool Boodhoo, and is now ready for publication.

The Head of State said now that he is notified of this latest development, the date for the elections will be announced within a week and assured that all procedures will be carried out in accordance with the Constitution of Guyana.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment, Surujbally said that, β€œWe (GECOM) are very much ready…there are bits and pieces, all of which are solvable and all of which are capable of efficiently accomplishing and any other bits and pieces that might emerge over the next months. I hope that good sense will prevail and that we will have a violence-free, fair, and transparent election.”

President Bharrat Jagdeo says he will announce the date of elections within a week.

GUYANESE Head of State President Bharrat Jagdeo said, now that he has been informed by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) as to the status quo of the Official List of Electors – or Voters’ List – he will announce the date of elections β€œwithin a week.”

He made the announcement about β€˜the big announcement’ at a press briefing held at the Office of the President yesterday.

The President told reporters that GECOM sent him a letter, yesterday, in which the Commission detailed its readiness for the holding of the upcoming polls.

The letter reads: β€œExcellency, please be advised that the Official List of Electors has been prepared in accordance with the National Registration Act Chapter 19:08, the Registration of the People Act 103, the Elections Laws Amendment Act number 15 of 2000.

β€œPlease be further informed that the Official List of Electors has been duly certified by Mr. Gocool Boodhoo, Chief Elections Officer and is now ready for publication. Accompanying this letter is a CD containing the OLE in PDF format,” stated the letter – signed by GECOM Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally.

President Jagdeo told reporters yesterday that, β€œnow that I have received the notification from the Chairman of the Elections Commission, I plan to – and I know most of you showed up here for this announcement - I plan to, within the week [announce a date for elections].

β€œAs most of you will be aware, I have been on record that this would be held in the constitutionally prescribed period for elections in Guyana and so everything will be done in accordance with our Constitution,” the President said.

GECOM had announced that November 14 was its earliest ready date. The President is not expected to set a polling date prior to this.

Further, Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Luncheon, at his last post-Cabinet press briefing, had corrected his earlier stated date by which the new Parliament must be in place. This date is January 28, 2012, four months after the dissolution of the last Parliament. Dr. Luncheo had previously announced December 28, 2011 as that date.

According to the HPS, contracts for the procurement of polling day equipment, tools and materials were also presented and approved by Cabinet. GECOM has assured that, thus far, no β€˜hiccups’ have been recorded as preparations are proceeding as planned, according to Dr. Luncheon.
