President Jagdeo reviews CBSI with US Deputy Asst, Secretary of State

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs in the US Department of State Julissa Reynoso, apprised President Bharrat Jagdeo on the deliberations at the just concluded Second Meeting of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI).

Reynoso, an active participant in the two-day session at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC), met the Guyanese Head of State today at the Office of the President in the presence of US Ambassador to Guyana Brendt Hardt and Deputy Chief of Mission to Guyana Thomas Pierce.

The visiting team used the occasion to convey gratitude to President Jagdeo for the Government of Guyana being host to the auspicious meeting and also engaged in meaningful discussions on the US support to Guyana’s development agenda.

This was according to Ambassador Hardt who spoke briefly with the Government Information Agency (GINA).

CBSI follows the first session in Jamaica, where partnering States have been focusing on law enforcement information sharing, cooperation and capacity building, crime prevention and maritime security cooperation.

Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee who was among the main speakers at the opening session on October 13 said Guyana was pleased to host the second engagement meeting and stands committed to ensuring that the partnership between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the United States (US) grow from strength to strength.

He also highlighted the need for programmes and strategies to address the growing problem of gangs, so as to divert the youth population away from such deviant activities and to this end he expressed satisfaction that work has already commenced in this regard.
