President Donald Ramotar

San Juan, Nov 25 (EFE).- With the likelihood of an early poll, Guyana's ruling PPP/C is holding talks about presidential nominations and said Tuesday that its only candidate for the position of president is incumbent Donald Ramotar.

"President Ramotar obviously is candidate for the time being ... there are no other names there," PPP/C general secretary Clement Rohee said.

Rohee told reporters that the PPP/C Executive Committee is expected to deliberate on the presidential nomination, as well as the nomination of the party's prime ministerial candidate and that a public pronouncement on both nominations will be made soon.

"We will make an announcement that covers everything. At the appropriate point in time we will say exactly what the position is," Rohee said.

Political observers say the country could hold early elections after opposition legislators rejected an invitation from Ramotar for dialogue following his decision to prorogue parliament on Nov. 10.

Ramotar has defended his decision, saying it was intended to pave the way for greater dialogue among political parties, while keeping the current parliament technically alive to address critically important issues.

The opposition parties, which have a one-seat majority in the 65-member National Assembly, filed a motion of no-confidence in the government and planned a debate as soon as legislators returned from the annual recess.

Ramotar has made it clear that if talks with lawmakers fail, he would move to hold fresh elections.

The last general elections in Guyana were held in November 2011, when the PPP/C won 48.62 percent of the vote, followed by the Partnership for National Unity with 40.83 percent.

The Alliance for Change got the remaining votes

People will go out and vote in record numbers. The stalemate in parliament will come to an end with a victor commanding a minimum of 33 seats. There is only one party capable of doing so and I don't have to tell you. To defeat this party is no easy task. Given the history of this country and the role this party played in fighting for the rights of the poor and underprivileged there is little doubt that they will win again. The issue of corruption is a real one. Real in the sense that it exists and the Ramotar admin. is very concerned about since it can make or break any gov't. in today's world. The ruling party has already started a major crack-down on corruption inside and outside of the gov't. Party hacks under the guns are quiet, but those outside the party who have been targeted for investigation are firing out with all sorts of charges against the gov't.

The PPP knows that to continue to govern they must not only point to the undemocratic qualities of the opposition and dismal performance of the economy for almost 30 years. They know that they must continue to deliver to the people of Guyana and ensure there is an equitable distribution of the nation's wealth. They are cognizant of the fact the free market system is efficient but it can be rapacious at times leaving many outside the circle of prosperity. No amount of legislations or economic growth can completely wipe the problems an economy. The US still have poverty and unemployment despite its majestic stand in the world.

Guyana has to guard its democracy and gains of the last two decades. It has been imperative to do so those who hungers for power can and will destroy this nation's future if the given the opportunity. The PPP is here to deny those forces that opportunity. Let the opportunity to build Guyana be available to the people and not to a party.

Have you seen him lately? It's shocking how slim he is. His advisers did well and got him on a serious weight loss plan. Instead of wearing shirts for high-profile meetings, he can wear suits now. Good political strategy, and he'll garner more votes. His political opponents and haters were calling him all kinds of names here on GNI, well how do they feel now? Who's having the last laugh? Hahaha
