Opposition’s leadership is becoming increasingly militarised

Posted By Staff Writer On April 5, 2015 @ 5:02 am In Letters | No Comments

Dear Editor,

Since 2011 when Mr Granger accepted the leadership role of both the parliamentary opposition APNU and the PNC, there has been increasing evidence of the militarisation of the opposition’s leadership.

Legally, actively serving members of the Disciplined Forces are prohibited from active politics. Thus, retired officers dominate the political leadership, including Collins, Harmon and Felix.

The 2015 election campaign has seen an unprecedented increase in the presence of actively involved retired military personnel, many residing abroad, mostly in the USA.

The impact on the serving military is as expected. Mr Granger had been warned of the implications of the militarisation of his campaign. The history of the military’s role in the perpetuation of the illegal undemocratic Burnhamite PNC regime is recent still and painful; it is a blot on the military tradition in Guyana. One that Guy-anese should try hard not to forget.

The spectre of the PNC and the military becoming political bedfellows again must be disturbing to most Guyanese.

Political machinery run by the military is no longer fiction; Granger made it happen. Guyanese can only think of the implications of the military-political alliance succeeding in the coming election. The candidate list of APNU+AFC will confirm our worst fears.

Yours faithfully,
Roger Luncheon
Head, Presidential Secretariat

Why is it the PPP's business of who is supporting the Coalition?

They want to control that too?

Ex-military has no right to support whomever it wants?

Would it be OK if they supported the Kleptos?

How many of you can stomach this guy for another 5 years?

Why did he not get some of that free money to clean his teeth, beard and for haircuts?

FM

The PPP has made a career of making people of Guyana second class citizens.............depriving them of their basic democratic rights.

Guyanese are not allowed to support this political party or that political party only the rotten stinking thief man operation at freedom house.

Military leaders are needed in the failed state they dont want their government to have a hired killer living in their HQ as is happening with Freedom house.

FM

How many military supporters are they talking about?

Has the PNC done anything terroristic against the PPP using ex-military people?

Luncheon knows better than to engage in fear-mongering.  Seems as if Joe Singh might be supporting the coalition, as he was upset about the Ewing killing.

Given that Guyana had compulsory military service not so long ago, it's no surprise that so many people have a military background. Is Luncheon saying that people who served in the military are not suitable to engage in political life in Guyana?

Mr.T

He is looking for a politics and a country where only Thiefman and cowards have rights and can serve as a public official.

But if you have put your life on the line for your country then you dont have any rights as a citizen.
