A tireless performance from Jonathan Mangra led Bounty Colts to victory over Pepsi Sonics in the first of two matches played on Thursday, night 8, of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association in collaboration with Banks DIH, 1st, 2nd and U-23 division leagues.
Mangra, who was part of the successful Guyana Under-18 team that won silver medal at the 2017 International Basketball Foundation (IBF) Lesser Antilles 3X3 Championships in February this year, played on Wednesday night in the Colts U-23 win against Plaisance Guardians; on Thursday he returned in Second division action and scored a game high 19 points.
Colts, the defending champions in the 2nd division, won that game 99-40 against Sonics. Colts led by Mangra got off to a flier, leading the first quarter 23-6 and the half by a huge 52-16 scorecard.
Supporting Mangra in the 59-point blowout were Quacy Lindo (15 points) and Timothy Thompson (14 points) along with Evans Johnson and Denzil Phillips who both scored 12 points apiece.
Terrence Andin (12 points) and Shaquan Gill (10 points) were the top performers for the losers Pepsi Sonics.
Game two was a first Division match in which Ravens added to the woes of Pacesetters basketball club that lost to Eagles on Wednesday in the U-23 division, by inflicting a 69-66 loss on the yellow outfitted Pacesetters unit. This game was more competitive than the first match of the night in which Colts blew out Sonics. The lead continuously went back and forth between Ravens and Pacesetters. Ravens led the 1st quarter 14-15 and Pacesetters took the mantle in the 2nd quarter 32-30 and the 3rdquarter 52-51. But in the final period of play Ravens outscored Pacesetters 18-14 to edge to a 3 point 69-66 victory.
Ryan Stephney’s 16 points was the main score for Ravens.
He was ably supported by Dominic Vincente 14 points, Owan Walton 11 and Ryan Gullen 10.
The main men for the losers, Pacesetters, were Stephon Gillis 16 points, Nathan Saul 11 and Travis Williams 10.
Tough luck for Pacesetters who were edged by Eagles the previous night.
Matches in the Powerade/Rainforest Water/Malta Supreme/GABA Tournament continues tonight at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with three matches beginning at 5:30 pm. Those games are Eagles vs. Colts in the Under 23 division, Nets vs. Knights @7:30 pm and Colts vs. Sonics @9:30 both in the 1st division.
