"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”

Frederick Douglass - American abolitionist

yuji, Frederick Douglas was a respected black publicist and abolitionist.

However, the quotation at the head of this thread is not about slavery but about power generally.

In that quote, Douglas has pointed out a historical fact, namely, that rulers and governments don't grant the ruled/governed justice and freedoms without mass pressure, demands, demonstrations, etc.

People get the kind of government they deserve. If they sit and fold their arms while rights are taken away from them, they have only themselves to blame for authoritarian rulers.

If people want good and just governance they must fight for it.
