Positivo Announces the Ypy Tablet
With no exemption, the product will be priced upwards of US$ 588

IT companies did not wait for the Senate to vote the Preliminary Injunction including tablets made in Brazil under the Digital Inclusion Program, which would make them eligible for tax exemptions that could lower the product’s price by up to 31%. Nonetheless, Positivo Informática announced its tablet line last Tuesday, September 20.

Named Ypy, the product will run an Android-based operating system fully in Portuguese. The cheapest 7-inch model no 3G will cost about US$ 588, whereas the prices for the other models are still being set. The devices will come with 50 apps, including music, games and books geared to the Brazilian market.

Grupo Positivo’s CEO Hélio Bruck Rotenberg said that he wanted to make the Positivo tablets cheaper than Apple’s iPad. In addition, he plans to design a Spanish-language version for the Argentine market as early as this year, after consolidating Ypy in the Brazilian retail market.
