Obama: Give us our drone back
Mon Dec 12, 2011.

Following days of silence on the American spy drone captured and unveiled by Iranian armed forces, US President Barack Obama says Washington has asked Tehran to return the US reconnaissance drone.

β€œWe've asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond,” Obama said in a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Monday.

The plea comes as the US and CIA refused to adopt an official position after Iran aired footage of the captured unmanned aerial vehicle on December 8.

The US RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft was brought down with minimal damage by the Iranian Army's electronic warfare unit on Sunday, December 4, 2011, when flying over the northeastern Iran city of Kashmar, some 225 kilometers (140 miles) away from the Afghan border.

On December 6, two US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to CNN that the drone was part of a CIA reconnaissance mission, involving the US intelligence community stationed in Afghanistan.

They claimed the reconnaissance capability of the RQ-170 Sentinel drone enabled it to gather information from inside Iran by flying along Afghanistan's border with the Islamic Republic.

The RQ-170 is an unmanned stealth aircraft designed and developed by the Lockheed Martin Company.

Iran has announced that it intends to carry out reverse engineering on the aircraft, which is similar in design to a US Air Force B2 stealth bomber.

Tehran says that the US drone spy mission was a β€œhostile act,” adding that it will lodge a complaint with the United Nations over the violation of its air sovereignty by the intelligence gathering aircraft.

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaei on December 8 called on the world body to condemn US aggressive moves against the Islamic Republic with respect to the reconnaissance drone that violated the Iranian airspace.

He made the plea in a letter sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz a-Nasser, and Vitaly Churkin, Russia's UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for December.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swiss ambassador, who represents US interests in the country, and the Afghan ambassador to condemn the US violation of Iranian airspace.

Nah!! it cannot power up, but there is a simple way that Obama can get back his drone.
As the Iranians would say give us back our US$25 billions that you have frozen(stole) since thirty three years ago with interest, and you can have your drone back. Big Grin

The money belong to the Iranians not the oppressive mullahs. Obama may say he want the drone back in public but they are looking for it with all eyes in the skies and will find it.

I agree with you, they will get it after the Chinese and Russians get blueprint of it. Big Grin

Reverse engineer this technology, and sell the info. to Russian and Chinese. Iran will in the future build their own RQ-170 drone or even an improve model.

Iraq in 1990 made a huge mistake thinking the US was just a bigger version of Iran. The US would make the same mistake thinking Iran is just a bigger version of Iraq.

The US has little options and choice regarding Iran. Why you think Obama did not authorize an airstrike to destroy the drone just as it went down. A military option is less and less likely.

The Us does not know where they have the drone.

Iran is no match for the US fire power and the US does not care to hold position so Iran would be in the dark ages in a week if there is an on going fire fight. It will not be a war since Iran has no ability to respond.

placate your own mind. It is inevitable that bombs will fall on their heads if there is not change to the stupid posturing of its rulers. The only redeeming quality is the the People in general are not like their rulers and are themselves under the foot of autocrats.

The "Art of War" bai. Dem Iranians ain't stupid Saddam to go take on the US head on. The US is very uncertain as to the depth and breadth of Iran's capability and as such don't want to take punitive action. Furthermore, the Iranians are not breaking international law as such the US has to "go it alone" and the last thing the American people want is another protracted and uncertain conflict. The invasion of Iraq was a monumental strategic error which you have begun to see play out and will do over the next decade. Huff and puff is just a domestic feel-good factor.

The US not only knows the scope and reach of their ability it also has the means to thwart it with a decade ago technology. The invasion of Iraq was not a monumental disaster. The decommissioning of the bathist army was. It released 80 thousand trained fighters in a disgruntled state into the society where they began an intertribal war on their own which continues today.

I will leave you on that thought, but I would agree, dismantling the military was te compounding error. On the other hand, if you think the monumental mistake means Iraq, you are mistaken.

Iran is not an invade and hold; it is a search and destroy. That was already noted above. The Iranians themselves will overrun the mullahs in the carnage.

Obama has an economy to fix which is America's number priority. He now concedes that it will take more than one president to solve it. America has to fix its house. Replacing the Mullahs in Iran won't change much at home for the American people.

Because they cant, simply that. They have no satellites for targeting the ships, that will bring in the fighters and control the skies. They have no long range missiles or bombers and they quickly will have no missile defense system because as soon as it comes on line the satellites will be used to target it. The US also has a bunch of new very new military satellites in space. Also, there are hundreds of predators and raptors that can be flown into their backyards without they ever knowing.

And that is where his attention should have been rather than sending our hi-tech assets on an uncertain mission. It seems like the more we learn, the less we understand. Our peaceful nation never seem tired of longing for war.

Soldiers should not be nation builders. If the US used strategies as the Romans, Alexander or even the Khan, Afganistan would be pacified in a week. One cannot do that in modern times. We have no interest there now and this pseudo concern for a people who want to live like medieval serfs wastes resources and men. They should be allowed to do so if they please.

I do not even give a damn if the Taliban takes over the place. Having Karazi and the society of individual fiefdoms is no less than they would have it. We should leave. We went there to disarm a government for sponsoring state terrorism and that fight is over for now

I am not saying we should go in. I am assessing their chances. If they want a nuclear bomb...sad but true...they should not have one.

And why not?
Look at pakistan. There are a bunch of crazies in the ISI not reluctant to send all 5 to 20 of their bombs into India. If that government falls, the US is bombing every military site and India is in there like locusts securing their state from annihilation. And Pakistan is a little more rational than Iran!

Religious rule is never good for a state. Iran is the first state in the entire history of Islam where Mullahs dominate the society from top down. Religion in this position is totalitarian. They rule by interpretations when rule needs to be from analysis. Iran can be a light in the ME but it is an oppressive retrogressive society with a madman as it visible face and mullahs pulling his strings. That is a recipe for unbridled ignorance.
