Cabinet at its first meeting on December 6

Following the 2011 General and Regional Elections and the swearing in of the new President and Cabinet members, President Donald Ramotar, on Tuesday, met with his Ministers and Advisors at the Office of the President.

During the meeting President Ramotar recognised the level and merits of continuity that was obtained with the appointment of his ministers and noted the retention of Cabinet’s principal officer Dr. Roger Luncheon and, advisors Gail Teixeira and Odinga Lumumba. This was highlighted by Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon during today’s press briefing held at the Office of the President.

Dr. Luncheon indicated that the members were advised about the establishment of their sectoral schedule of responsibilities for which Ministers will be accountable collectively, to parliament. The immediate intentions of the administration were also discussed.

The Cabinet members were also urged by President Ramotar to resume normalcy of government operations and to prepare for the beginning of the parliamentary term.

The HPS stressed that President Ramotar indicated that another one of his intentions was to implement campaign promises.

Dr. Luncheon pointed out that while in discussion with his Ministers and Advisors, President Ramotar expressed appreciation for their efforts and contributions which resulted in the re-election of the PPP/C government.

β€œThat meeting on December 6, the President noted the subsequent allocation of seats in the National Assembly the outcome of which would see the governing party, the PPP/C, enjoying just a minority in the 10th parliament,” stated Dr. Luncheon.

He added that the President has observed that so far only the PPP/C and the AFC have extracted the names of their Members of Parliament and submitted those, as is required, to GECOM.

President Ramotar additionally updated Cabinet about his intentions to continue the engagement with the Opposition political parties in parliament. He has met with members of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Alliance for Change (AFC) and The United Force (TUF).
