Guyana’s National Under-17 Basketball Team will continue preparations this weekend for the CENTROBASKET Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, July 26-30 after qualifying last year with a second place finish at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U-16 Championships in Guyana.
CENTROBASKET is the Central American Championships and Guyana is placed in Group β€˜A’ with Mexico, Puerto Rico and Bahamas, which had beaten them in the CBC U-16 Final. The top three teams from CBC qualify for the CENTROBASKET Championships.
Kaieteur Sport was able to confirm yesterday that the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) is pursuing United States of America (USA)-based Guyanese, Darien Pringle and Sherwin Prince as two super talented players to be in any contention in the Dominican Republic.
Guyana will be competing for the first time at the CENTROBASKET Under-17 Championship at any level. In addition to those two foreign talents, the federation is bringing home two players from the US in forward, Jordon Alphonso and guard/forward, Kevon Wiggins.
The other players shortlisted from the initial group of 28 include Kwesi Roberts, Andrew Johnson, Jermaine King, Royden Glasgow, Akeem Crandon, Kelmar Carmichael, Isaiah Hintzen, Shemar France, Jahleel Young, Nigel Johnson, Denzil Rose, Jether Harris, Jonathan Copeland and Tremain Emmanuel.
Pringle and Prince are awaiting confirmation of their Guyanese passports to join the team. One of the eligibility rules for players to represent Guyana is that they must be in possession of their Guyanese passport.
The group has so far endured two weekends of excessive conditioning work and will be heading into offensive and defensive drills this weekend. The team is relying on the fact that the group of players have been together since CBC last year to have some results in the Dominican Republic next month.
The other group at the CENTROBASKET U-17 Championships includes the hosts, Dominican Republic, Panama, Jamaica and the United States Virgin Islands.
