Muslim community leaders endorse APNU+AFC

APNU+AFC Presidential Candidate Brigadier David Granger and Prime Ministerial Candidate Moses Nagamootoo along with other Coalition leaders, on Thursday April 23, met with prominent representatives of the Islamic Community in Guyana.

The group which included members of the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex- ACIC, and other religious leaders, outlined a list of concerns facing the Muslim community in Guyana.

During the meeting, the Muslim leaders signaled their endorsement of the APNU+AFC coalition. The Islamic leaders stated that it was time to put an end to the moral decay of society and for the development of Guyana to have a human face.

In endorsing the APNU+AFC, the Muslim leaders noted that Guyana needed a fresh start, and that people were placing great expectation in the APNU+AFC. Some of the issues raised included rampant crime, corruption, governance and the moral decay of the society.

In a press release, Brigadier Granger said one of the primary missions of the Coalition is the achievement of National Unity. Granger said, “Many of our problems will be solved if we can achieve national unity,” according to the release.

Granger assured the gathering that their concerns would be addressed by an APNU+AFC in government and promised that his administration would maintain contact with the religious community.

According to the release, the APNU+AFC Prime Ministerial Candidate Moses Nagamootoo in his remarks said that much had gone wrong in Guyana.

“Guyana is a pleural Society and all are entitled to co-exist.” Nagamootoo said that the Islamic community must be a partner if the country was to recover from the current moral decay; “the Islamic community must help, if we are to recover lost values.”

Some of the prominent Islamic leaders who attended were Raheema Rahaman, Hakeem Khan, ReyazHusein, Fazil Azeez, Hakim Khan and Fazal Ali.

I like these boys. Similar to the heart beat. Never missed. They expecting a change. I hope Granger and Nagamootoo knows the key to a successful transition is a Nationalistic one. No public endorsements of communities within the community of Guyana. We already have a great many divisions. We need healing.

CONTRARY to reports by the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition, that the “Muslim community” has endorsed them, the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) has rejected this notion in its entirety, lamenting that “it has not endorsed [the] APNU+AFC Coalition” as was reported.Based on the need for representation of the issues facing the Muslim community, and also the fears for the pre and post-elections scenario, the ACIC opted to engage the two major political parties since no other major Islamic organisation had explored this option.

One of the posts on the APNU+AFC Facebook page which states: “…the Muslim leaders signalled their endorsement of the APNU+AFC coalition

As such, an ACIC and a faction of the wider Muslim community met with prime ministerial candidate of the ruling’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Ms. Elisabeth Harper last week when they deliberated on issues relating to the advancement of the Muslim community.
The ACIC disclosed that following hours of discussions between the delegation and Ms. Harper, a photo op was subsequently had, “but neither she [Ms. Harper] nor her political party, the PPP/C used the meeting as an endorsement.”
In similar fashion, the delegation met with the APNU+AFC coalition on Thursday, April 23, with the same motive of engaging the political party on issues surrounding the Muslim community.
According to the ACIC in a statement issued yesterday, the presence of the Muslim leaders at these meetings was “never to endorse any political party,” but rather “to engage the two major political parties in understanding the issues facing the Muslim community and also the wider Guyanese community.”
But this meeting between the APNU+AFC coalition and the ACIC delegation was interpreted as an “endorsement” by the coalition, since photographs of the meeting were taken to social media and posted on the APNU+AFC pages bearing the caption: “Muslim community endorses APNU+AFC.”
Expressing their “shock” yesterday at these recent developments, the ACIC made it pellucid that they“have not endorsed the APNU+AFC coalition” as was reported.
Further disclosing that “it is not a political institution,” the Islamic body related that it is Guyana’s main Islamic Centre and a centre of spirituality, education, peace, universal goodwill and harmony,which seeks to work and support only the elected leaders of Guyana. Hence the opportunity was taken to engage both of the major political parties ahead of the May 11 General and Regional elections.
Detailing the repercussions of such a move by the coalition to sell the idea that the ACIC has endorsed them, the Islamic body explained that this move has caused the Complex to “lose impartiality” as their local and international partners, many of whom fund their projects, are “dismayed at the supposition of an endorsement of a political party.”
According to the ACIC, “had the APNU+AFC stated that ACIC and other Muslim Leaders had discussions and published photos, we would have had no complaints, the fact that it stated our endorsement of the party, is what we feel is most unfortunate.

The Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) is refuting reports by the APNU+AFC coalition that it has been blessed with their endorsement.

The ACIC in a statement issued on Friday, April 24 made it clear that it has not endorsed any political party contesting the May 11 general and regional elections.

This is in total contrast to a press release issued by the APNU+AFC coalition on Thursday, April 23 which stated that the ACIC met with leaders of the coalition and gave their endorsement.

However, the ACIC now claims that the coalition misinterpreted the meeting.

“It is unfortunate to note that a meeting with APNU+AFC & Leaders of ACIC and the wider Muslim community, has been interpreted and a release circulated locally and internationally, as the ACIC’s endorsement for APNU+AFC,” the statement, which was signed by President General of the ACIC Hakeem Khan, noted.

It further stated that the ACIC is Guyana’s leading Islamic Center and a center of spirituality, education, peace, universal goodwill and harmony and it is not a political institution “and hence, will work and support the elected government of Guyana, irrespective from which party or parties form the government and we will respect the honorable members of the opposition of the day. It has always enjoyed the blessings and support of the Government, and indeed, that of the Opposition, and all other religious, civic and non-governmental groups of the nation.”

According to ACIC, its local and international partners, many of whom fund their projects are dismayed at the supposition of an endorsement of a political party.

“Visiting the Opposition H/Q was an act of courtesy to communicate and seek the policies of the political party, and was never meant to give political endorsement to the party. This we are certain was recognized but we are uncertain as to how the miscommunication was issued.”

The Islamic body said it had a similar meeting with Prime Ministerial Candidate of the PPP/C, Elisabeth Harper last week.

Former Magistrate Fazil Azeez shot; AFC condemns attack

Former Magistrate and Radio Broadcaster Fazil Azeez was Saturday shot to his abdomen during an attempt to rob him, police said.

Azeez's condition is listed as stable. Police said in a statement that Azeez, currently a practicing attorney, was admitted to a city hospital in a stable condition. Police said in its statement that at about 1155 AM Saturday April 25, 2015, Azeez of Dowding Street, Kitty, was at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, when he was held up by a man armed with a firearm who demanded cash.

"Azeez resisted and was shot to his abdomen by the armed man who escaped after persons in the area came out upon hearing the discharge of the firearm," according to a police spokesman. Meanwhile, the Alliance For Change+ A Partnership for National Unity (APNU+AFC) condemned the attack on Azeez and wished him a speedy recovery.

"The Coalition has received credible reports that Azeez was not robbed during the attack. Azeez is known for his principled stance against corruption, crime and poor governance," said the opposition grouping.

According to the political organisation, Azeez was a friend of APNU+AFC and is especially close to Prime Ministerial candidate Moses Nagamootoo. The two practiced together after studying and graduating from the Hugh Wooding Law School, University of West Indies in 2002.

Azeez served as General Manager of the now defunct Guyana Broadcasting Corporation while Nagamootoo served as Minister of Information.

Nagamootoo visited Azeez in hospital after his surgery. Nagamootoo also visited FyuseHoosein, a businessman who was also shot in Georgetown on Friday.

Azeez was also one of the Muslim leaders who met with Presidential Candidate David Granger and Prime Ministerial Candidate Nagamootoo on Thursday last.

"The Coalition appeals to the Muslim community of the West Coast and West Bank Demerara to stand firm in this difficult time."

Was Fazil Azeez a member of the West Demerara Anna Catherina Group? If so then this thing might have some Political Implications: To put it bluntly, seems like the PPP/C are involved some how or the other, the man was not robbed (so there is no motive to rob him)

The entire Guyana believes that Crum E Wing was a Political Hit, and most businessmen who refused to support the PPP/C is being targeted. Go figure

The only change will be return of the PPP as a majority Govt. Understand, the "trick" of 2011 pushed Guyana political thinking 20 years back. That one-trick pony tumble over long time. The message gone flat because what was given up to the AFC to get them in the coalition has not made a discernible impact on the people they want to attract. Everyone try their best to dance around the real fears of the people and NOTHING thus far has convinced the masses otherwise. It's just a new sheep's clothing on the same old wolf.
