[www.inewsguyana.com] – Criminal charges could be brought against City Mayor Hamilton Green after he disrupted the annual Easter Day revenue collection along the seawalls, Georgetown today, (Monday, April 21).

It is alleged that the Mayor, accompanied by his bodyguards, overpowered Revenue Collectors including the Assistant Town Clerk and the Deputy Town Clerk and took away the keys to the vehicle which was transporting the staff and its money. It is also alleged that the Mayor stormed the seawalls where vendors and other citizens had gathered advising them not to pay any rates to the Council.

The vehicle was left with its windows down, though it rained periodically and the staff was forced to take the cash they had already collected to safety.

iNews (www.inewsguyana.com) was reliably informed that notwithstanding the fact that the police were called in, Green told ranks that he had no keys as he continued to intimidate Council workers and others around.

The staff was taken to the Alberttown Police Station where they gave statements relating what had transpired and which will be used to possibly bring criminal charges against Mayor Green.

When iNews (www.inewsguyana.com) visited the scene, the Mayor could not be found and calls to his phone went unanswered.

However, Officer in Charge of security details at the Council, ASP Gordon Langevine informed that he was unaware what could have forced the Mayor to do what he did but noted very sternly that his actions constitutes a criminal offence.

“The vehicle is an automatic vehicle and it cannot be towed away, so the vehicle is here with windows down, we had to transfer cash… we are hoping that police will come and assist us with crash truck to take it away,” he explained.

When contacted, embattled Town Clerk (ag) Carol Sooba related that the grievance stemmed from the fact that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green were no longer responsible for the activity.

Sooba claimed that the event which has been taking place for over 20 years was being controlled by the Deputy Mayor in recent years. She claimed that the Deputy Mayor used her position to manipulate the staff and also leveled accusations of embezzlement against her.

Sooba lamented and decried what she said was the abuse by the Mayor of resources given to him by the Council for his protection. In making her point, she stressed that the Mayor’s bodyguards were armed and noted that it was not the first time he abused the privilege in this regard.

Ofcourse only the Corrupt PPP/C comes in for blame, had they held local govt elections since ages ago, Mayor Green would not have been there.

The Fiasco between The Mayor of Georgetown versus The Town Clerk, will be a long and drawn out one, I will not be surprised if one day, we were to hear of some gun play in this situation.

The Deputy Mayor of Georgetown has written to the Auditor General requesting that an investigation be launched into the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to the Georgetown City Council by Town Clerk Carol Sooba.

In the letter to the Auditor General, Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green pointed out the payment of $500,000 in legal fees to Attorney Roysdale Forde for professional services rendered to the Town Clerk in relation to legal proceedings underway in the High Court by Royston King against the Ministry of Local Government.

The Deputy Mayor in her letter pointed out that the court matter has nothing to do with the Georgetown City Council and the Town Clerk and therefore Ms. Sooba overstepped her authority at the City Council by making herself out to be a party in the matter and hiring a private attorney to represent her in the same matter and then have the council bear the costs for that attorney.

Waiting to see how this will play out.

The Game of ‘Cat and Mouse’ continues at City Hall between City Mayor, Hamilton Green and Town Clerk (ag), Carol Sooba.

At a press conference on Tuesday, April 22, Sooba condemned the actions of Green, who allegedly sabotaged the Easter Day Revenue collection exercise along the Georgetown Seawall, leaving her staff traumatized on Monday, April 21.

The Mayor, accompanied by his bodyguards, allegedly took away the keys to the vehicle which was transporting the staff and its money and told vendors and other citizens not to pay any rates to the council.

Sooba said that the actions of the Mayor show that he has descended to “an all time low” in order to tarnish her reputation as well as the reputation of her staff.

Following the Mayor’s alleged actions the staff took the money to safety and then visited the Albertown Police station where they gave statements about what transpired.

The police ranks were called in but the mayor allegedly denied having the keys to the vehicle.

According to Sooba, the sale of these spots has been an ongoing exercise for over 20 years to offset the expenses of preparatory works and the cleaning of the area.

She said that she could not understand why they could not pool their efforts to have the activity run in an organised way.

The Town Clerk informed that the Council has written to the Local Government Minister, Norman Whittaker to have the matter sorted out and it is up to the police to level criminal charges against the Mayor.

Tell that to your friends in  the PPP. By not holding elections for over 20 years we still have some old dogs.
