Marriott has officially opened its first-ever hotel in Guyana.

The property is located in the country’s capital, Georgetown, with views of the crossroads of the Demerara River and the Atlantic Ocean. It includes a total of 192 rooms and five suites across nine floors, along with 11 meeting rooms and 8,321 feet of meeting space and a pool, according to Marriott. It also features a restaurant called Terra Mare, a pool bar and grill and a “Great Room.”

The hotel welcomed its first guest on Wednesday morning, with Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh calling the debut an “extremely exciting and momentous moment for all Guyanese.”

He said Guyana’s government was “delighted that the company viewed Guyana as a place where they would like to do business.”

The hope is that Marriott’s debut could present a major boost for the country, whose tourism industry is based largely on eco-tourism but has been steadily growing in recent years.

In fact, Guyana managed to attract almost 206,000 arrivals in 2014, according to data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The hotel will provide jobs for around 250 people, according to the government, and about 100 indirectly.

The $51 million project first launched in November 2011.

It’s the brand’s second new hotel in the region to open this year, following the debut of the Marriott Port-au-Prince in Haiti in February.

Noting that the Marriott is an international hotel brand of the highest repute, “well known for the excellence of its properties and the excellence of the services that they offer”, the Minister said Government was delighted that the company viewed Guyana as a place where they would like to do business.

He added that the Marriott was “sufficiently confident to associate their brand with this country and they have worked closely with us to establish a hotel that has true international standard, class and calibre”.

The Finance Minister said he has had a number of conversations with the hotel chain’s top leadership and on every occasion, he has heard that the company is proud to be associated with the Guyana Marriott and they are proud to have the company’s brand attached to it. In addition to this, they have said that the local hotel can hold its own against any other Marriott branded hotel, internationally. He described the facility as a “fantastic addition to the local landscape and provides a very important fillip to the tourism industry and to the tourism landscape infrastructure in Guyana”.

The fact that the first guest is the head of a well-known multinational company, which itself with its investments locally in the oil and gas sector has also indicated its belief that Guyana is a good place to do business, with a global footprint, sends a strong signal of confidence and optimism in this country’s future, Minster Singh said.

“A fantastic place, as expected,” was the description given by the Marriott’s first guest, Giancarlo Ariza, adding that it was one of the best hotel brands internationally. He added that the Marriott Guyana, will make many changes in the local hotel industry, “not only that, it’s going to make good opportunities for development and other business around the hotel area”.

The Marriott, a five-star brand is known around the world as one of the most prestigious and quality hotel brands. The hotel chain is present in 72 countries, comprising more than 3600 hotels, and a staff complement of 129,000.

The establishment will provide employment for 250 people in the hospitality business, through direct employment, and another 100 indirectly. This will be accomplished through the utilisation of the services of local workers such as electricians and those in the construction field. The 197–room Marriott boasts a large ballroom, a conference centre, casino, nightclub, restaurant, a concrete walkway, and all other amenities of a world-class hotel. The US$51 million project was launched in November 2011.

Marriott will be full. The other hotels will be empty.   Marriott will cater to business people.  Pegasus and Cara will suffer.  But then that is the PPPs intent.

No new tourists will be attracted to Guyana because Guyana is eco adventure, G/town is a sewer, and there are no facilities in the interior capable of attracting a volume of eco tourists.

When Cathy Hughes, a woman who is in the tourism sector, replaces Irfaan then Guyana will develop its tourist product.

Do not know why the PPP babblers are comparing health care in 2015 with 1975.  Even rich nations like Canada deliver vastly better health care now than they did 40 years ago.

If the PPP is using this as a bench mark and claiming some minute improvement they are truly sad.

Guyana continues to have the highest infant mortality, maternal mortality and the shortest life expectancy within the English speaking Caribbean.  This was not so in 1975.

Worldwide, there are competitions between hotels to cater to the people.

Guyana is no different as competition for guests and pertinent occasions have always existed.

Except in Guyana govt uses taxpayers money to compete with private business in a sector with 50 to 55% occupancy.

The Maternity Unit under construction will alleviate overcrowding to some extent

Posted By Staff Writer On June 14, 2012 @ 5:07 am In Letters | No Comments

Dear Editor,

Reference is made to your correspondence dated June 9, 2012 pertaining to a letter that was published by the Stabroek News on June 8, 2012 under the caption, ‘There should not be two mothers and their babies to a bed in the Georgetown Hospital.’

Management wishes to inform you that it is aware of this situation and advises that it is neither proud nor happy about it.  The comfort and care of these patients are of paramount importance; however, there are limitations which cannot be overcome overnight. The Maternity Unit is currently under construction to accommodate over a dozen beds each on the Pre and Post-Natal Wards.  These works are expected to be completed within a matter of weeks. This will, to some extent, alleviate the difficulty of overcrowding.

Management however wishes to state that the problem of bed-sharing arises mainly as a result of two factors: during certain periods of the year (also referred to as ‘crop season&rsquo, there is an increase in the number of patients who are admitted to the ward, in addition to the unexpected referrals which come to the institution.

There is also the problem of patients who ‘lodge’ on the ward and/or some who do not leave because their babies have been admitted to the Neo-natal Unit.

Management cannot be insensitive and demand that these mothers leave, so they remain on the ward.  Management cannot ask them to sit and sleep in the chairs outside the unit either, for that too will be met with obvious and just criticisms.

The staff mentioned in this letter are all aware and concerned about this situation, but the hospital can only function with the resources it has.

Yours faithfully,
A Proctor
