Salman Khan was getting married. Don’t be astonished! Take a seat and breathe in and out because, yes you read it right, Salman Khan did end up, almost reaching the alter once in his lifetime.

It is said that the wedding invitations were printed.

27th May 1994 was going to be the biggest day of his life. The heartthrob, the beloved Prem of Bollywood had found a life partner in a girl called Sangeeta Bijlani and the two were madly in love. For once, everything was set. Right from the wedding date to invitations, preparations were in full swing.

After all, he was the only Khan in the Khan trio who was still single and about to say I do! Aamir Khan was married to Reena and SRK - Gauri were already happily married. While both of them were taken before their careers skyrocketed, here was a Khan, the one and only Salman who was tying the knot in the middle of his sky rocketing trajectory of filmography. Times were never better!

Who was Sangeeta Bijlani?
While both the other Khans were married to women outside the film fraternity, Salman Khan’s fate was somehow linked to Miss India. She was six years older to Salman. A July born Cancerian woman, who was obviously sensitive to everything around her, was about to marry Salman Khan. She won the Miss India title in 1980 and waited for a good 11 years for her film debut. She did her first film in 1991 in Kannada industry and signed another film in 1991 which never released. Her acting career didn’t prosper after that, until she met Salman Khan, Rajshri’s romantic hero, and four years later, she was all set to marry him in the summer of 1994. A hot pair was slated to burn many hearts in the scorching heat.

Salman Khan weds Sangeeta Bijlani
Salman met her in 1988. He was dating a girl called Shaheen Jafri. But as fate had it, at a regular Bollywood party and their hearts clicked! For the first time, Salman had fallen for a lady who was elder to him. The duo did a few advertisements together for various brands and their public spotting (in the time when paparazzi wasn’t that mad a culture) became noticeable. Salman’s family liked her and there wasn’t any two ways about them not getting hitched. Sangeeta’s dream career never happened, but she was infact going to have the dream wedding every Salman fangirl would have died to have!

27th May 1994: Was it jinxed?
For the first time in the history of Salman Khan’s colorful life, his wedding invitation was printed. But, the wedding never happened. Salman and Sangeeta reportedly indulged in numerous fights, disagreement and their split seemed inevitable. Sangeeta had dated actor Jacky Shroff before Salman. Sangeeta had openly declared that Salman was cheating on her with Somi Ali.

Confirmation and confessions
According to the biography written on Salman Khan, β€œMay 27, 1994, the date, which could be transformed into Salman Khan’s wedding date. If it happens then Sangeeta Bijlani becomes her wife not the ex-girlfriend. But it did not happen.”
As per the reports and excerpts in the book, Sangeeta said, β€œThe marriage of May 27 was the day chosen by the Salman Khan himself, because he had already been sanctioned by the family. But my family could not afford, because they wanted my happiness.”…. β€œa month before the wedding I felt there is something wrong. I started to follow him and found that he is not worth getting married. Not only that, I also felt that he is not even capable of becoming boyfriend. It was very emotionally traumatic and terrible experience. β€œ

When Ex-lovers became friends
Sangeeta later married cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin in 1996 and divorced him after 14 years of wedlock. It is said that Salman met her after hearing this news and made sure his family stood by Sangeeta’s side to give her moral support.
Today, they are often spotted with each other, at film screenings and events. Salman has launched more than 10 successful actresses in the industry, but Sangeeta isn’t one of them. The absence of any bitterness between the two is something to learn from Bhai. She’s still his 3 am friend.
