A suicide gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's main airport, one of Europe's busiest, has killed at least 32 people and injured 60 more.

Three attackers were involved, with one reportedly firing a Kalashnikov as they targeted an entry point to Ataturk international airport.

The attackers blew themselves up after police fired at them, officials say.

Recent bombings in Turkey have been linked to either Kurdish separatists or the so-called Islamic State (IS) group.

This looks like a major co-ordinated assault, the BBC's Mark Lowen reports.

Ataturk airport was long seen as a vulnerable target, our Turkey correspondent adds, reporting from a plane stuck on the tarmac in Istanbul.

There are X-ray scanners at the entry to the terminal but security checks for cars are limited.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack, calling for a "joint fight" against terrorism.

The US condemned the "heinous" attack, saying America remained "steadfast in our support for Turkey".

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: "We grieve for the victims... We stand by Turkey".

ISIS is really bad.  With all the bombings from the US and the Russians this terror group still shows no sign of weakening. They driven out of a city and then they're back. It's like a cat and mouse game.

ISIS military arm is Sadaam's defeated army joined by many Jihadis.  Sadaam's old army are fighting for Sunni rights and are/were moderates from an Islamic standpoint.  I don't see this coming to an end soon without a political settlement in Iraq.

My only problem here is I do not see the global anger against these fellows for desecrating a holy month as one sees against Theo Van Gough for example. It is the abject failure of mullahdom to inculcate their congregation in proper modes of expressing the religion of peace. That reflects back on my perennial complaint that there are no standards in islam and the complaints that we are this vs that is not reinforced by an ethos knowable by the Ummah. There  cannot be a consensus  desire across the world  to kill a cartoonist for drawing Mohamed and not similarly want to dismember those who do these evil deeds in the name of islam to muslims in their holy month.

Because ISIS itself have stronger sympathies in the masses than people are letting on.  This is why the group needs to be defanged and brought down.  Their military prowess is admired by many in the "mainstream".  If they are not brought down, their appeal will only grow regardless what is touted in public.  In the end though, key to success is Suni rights in Iraq.  With that, the jihadis could be brought down and eliminated.

BTW, this is the view of Trump.  Regardless what red meat he throws out, he is aware the fight is Iraq is for Suni rights.

Trump is a veritable ass what believes military power is all we can rely on and fails to see it means suffocating these people on the ground as is happening and also persuading minds to think differently about the value of life.

Everyone knows about Suni rights The vice President was vilified by the bush administration for suggesting federalism. Obama has been engaged completely in advising the Bagdhad of the need to moderate its stance. It is why the Shia brigades are not leading the charge in Fallujha or Mosul and the reason the Iranians are taking a backward step.

Trump is as retrogressive  as one can get here. No one in the region will care to partner with him.

I totally agree with your observations here. Muslims, especially their leaders show much hypocrisy in how they respond to different situations. That said, there is equal accountability on non-Muslims regarding Muslims. After 911, one right wing talk show host called for dropping bombs on Mecca. My guess is that she meant the grand mosque but she is not expected to know better. Incidentally there are more people in the grand mosque at any time than who perished on 911 and they are equally as innocent as the victims on 911. But we act like they are less human than we are. And it is not how we treat Muslims only but even non-whites as a who. Germany was by far the worst of the enemy during WWII. Even Italy was probably worse than Japan. Yet we dropped the atom bomb on Japan. My guess is that we couldn't bring ourselves to inflict that punishment on white Europe. We all joined in solidarity with our humankind in Paris and Brussels. We even did recently with Orlando. How did we manage to support our humankind in Istambul? Maybe we don't see them as part of humankind. Some British politicians are painting the Turks as not worthy of being in the EU even though Turkey had so much to do with Europe coming out of the dark age.

All these predictions and who's world view is right and who's smart and who do not raise their voices......all trash.

The following will not stop this spate of terrorism (and BTW the 70s were worse for terrorism and killings generally - Baader-Meinhoff gang, PLO, IRA, Carlos, Japanese Red Army, the Latin guerillas, 2 millions killed in Cambodia (now Campuchia); etc.):

  • Muslims shouting to the top of their lungs denouncing ISIS thugs
  • Base telling us Trump is smart and he will ban Muslims and put up a wall on the Mexican border; plus he knows (like Palin knows Russia from her backyard) about the Azerbaijanis (can he even pronounce that?), Kazaks, Uzbecks, etc.
  • Kzaaz berating Muslims going about their daily tasks - remember ISIS is not a religion; it is an ideology that's twisting a religion
  • Bibibski urging us to read some book about clash of civilization (as if there aren't a container load of these out there

Look, the British drew some boundaries in the Middle East without thought of tribal boundaries; the Europeans (feeling sorry for what Hitler did) gave Palestine to the Jews from Europe; oil happened; Bush invaded Iraq - bang!!!

Read Samuel Huntington's book, The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order.  It predicts exactly what you are suggesting.  He was a brilliant Harvard Professor who was well respected all over the world.

I read t he book about 20 years ago. Actually, it was a long essay and not a book then. The book is an expansion and not worth the read. It refutes "The end of History" by ***uyama, another essay by a foreign service operative. ***uyama said liberal democracy is the last form of human social organization and it the end all of things and every nation was in the process of gravitating to this position or should be encouraged to do so even coerced to it. It is a neocon viewpoint. Huntington said that we are still to evolve the proper social summoning creed and in the meanwhile we should brace ourselves for fundamentalist creeds ie eastern orthodoxy and Islam. ISIS does not fit the category as a fundamentalist creed but an abhorrent distortion of creed. It is anti west but does not constitute a threat that sufficiently demands all out western response. We are kicking their butts with minimal boots on the ground and the ones doing the fighting is the civilization they claim to be from, Islamic.
