Labour authorities have intervened in the immediate closure of a call centre in Linden and the dismissal of more than 90 persons without paying them off.
Junior Minister of Social Protection Simona Broomes said Toucan Connections Incorporated, the only Call Centre in the mining town, Region 10, violated labour laws when it closed operations recently and sent home the workers without notice.

She rebuffed claims by workers that the management told them to go to government for severance pay. This notion was quickly shut down by Minister Broomes, as she told the now unemployed persons that this is not true. "If it was told to you, that it is the responsibility of Government to pay your severance, I would like to say to you, this is not true. It is the responsibility of the person who employed you to do so," Brooms was quoted by the Government Information Agency as telling the now unemployed persons.
The minister explained that the management of the Call Centre violated the labour laws in Guyana, as these mandate that businesses upon their closure or intentions to do so, must first inform their employees and then the respective Government or State agency.
This has forced the Government to intervene to ensure that the now unemployed persons will be given their full benefits.
Brooms, who holds oversight responsibility for the labour department, led a team to the mining town Wednesday, to meet with officials and staff of the now closed Call Centre.

During the engagement with the manager, supervisor, and 86 staff members at the Centre, the Minister explained that she was informed of the issue by Regional Chairman, Rennis Morian, who was also present.
The Minister was informed by the staff that the Management of the Centre had advised them that the benefits due to them would be paid by the Government.

Qualfon, a Mexican-headquartered call centre that serves companies around the world, on Thursday opened a US$12 million campus that would eventually see at least 6,000 jobs being generated.
The facility, the third by Qualfon in Guyana, is located at Providence, East Bank Demerara
β€œYou have transformed lives by employing literally thousands of persons and improving their lives,” Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh was quoted as saying by the Government Information Agency (GINA).
President Donald Ramotar said Qualfon’s decision to operate in Guyana is testimony to government’s pro-business approach by spending a huge chunk of the national budget on education to prepare workers.
β€œThat is one of the ways that we partner with the private sector, local and foreign private sector,” he said, and added that while many spend money on training, the bulk of the investment in training and education comes from government,” he said.
Ramotar seized the opportunity to mention that government has begun putting a number of its services Online, a move that is also aimed at fighting perceptions of corruption.
The President noted that an India-funded Information Communications Technology (ICT) training facility at Providence.
Qualfon’s Guyana Chief Executive Officer, Mike Marrow and Founder and Chairman of Qualfon, Alfonso Gonzalez thanked government for facilitating their company’s investment over the past 10 years.

I know of two more businesses to close in the coming months, due to  lack of confidence and high crime rate.

K

You know it is quite possible, with the cocaine business taking a hit and a certain Government's loss, some companies will have no choice but to close down their businesses "fronts" poor dem.

Speaking of business "fronts". Has anyone heard anything about the fish canning business where coke was found in their fish?

Story buss out and no word since. Perhaps plans in the works and we just gotta sit back and watch the action.
