Lethem business place collapses in a heap

– Workers who β€œwent to buy food” escape; tens of millions lost

More than six months after a devastating fire at Patentia, West Bank Demerara, destroyed millions of dollars in pharmaceutical supplies, a businessman is facing an equally distressing state of affairs. His business place in Lethem, Region Nine, has collapsed, following flooding over the last few weeks, leaving at least three of his dogs missing and two workers who were staying there thanking their lucky stars.

According to Frank Satnarine, who was in Georgetown at the time, he was asleep Wednesday night when he received a phone call.

β€œMy friend told me that my building has collapsed. She said that she and her friend were passing after 8pm and she could not see the building.

They circled the compound and realised that something had happened.”

The businessman, who admitted that he is overwhelmed, said that police and other rescue workers went to the scene after the matter was reported.

β€œI had two workers in the building and it was feared that they were trapped inside.”

Persons were preparing to venture into the compound to start a search when the two workers turned up.

β€œThey said they went to buy food and the rains were falling and kept them back.”

Satnarine said that he had eight dogs in the yard, but they could only find five.

β€œI am flying in and hoping I can find them.”

The businessman explained that the property was being outfitted to open a drinking water operation and packaging facility.

β€œWe have equipment in the building and my partner from Brazil had asked me to keep some stationery. Everything is buried now in the rubble. We don’t know what can be saved.”

Lethem, a border town next to Brazil, has been prone to flooding from seasonal rainfall because of the terrain and its proximity to the nearby mountains and the Takutu River which divides Guyana with that country.

Several Region Nine communities were cut off because of rains recently.

According to Satnarine, the situation of flooding in the commercial zone where his property was located was made worse by the blocking off of drains by another businessman.

Staff from the local, municipal and/or government seem to be totally unaware of their responsibilities to prevent one from blocking the drains.

The building was painted with some interesting colors It looks like it was demolished with explosives.

Drugb goadee exploded? How can a block drain cause a building to implode like that?

Mit,

Dem people want insurance money. Granger, like Burnham, had plenty to give, but history tells us that the freeness usually finishes before everyone gets something on their plate.
