What chapter(s) and verses are included in Juz’ 11?:

The eleventh juz’ of the Qur’an contains parts of three chapters of the Quran: the last part of Surah At-Tauba (from verse 93), all of Surah Yunus, and the first few verses of Surah Hud (to verse 5).

When were the verses of this juz’ revealed?:

The first part of this juz', Surah At-Tauba ("Repentance") was primarily revealed at the time of the expedition to Tabuk, in the 9th year after Hijrah. The other two chapters, Surah Yunus and Surah Hud, both named after prophets of Islam, were revealed in Makkah prior to the Hijrah.

Select Quotations:

  • "Those triumph who turn to Allah in repentance, and who worship and praise Him, and seek His goodly acceptance, and bow down before Him and prostrate themselves in prayer, and enjoin good and forbid evil, and keep to the bounds set by Allah. And give glad tidings of Allah's promise to the believers." 9:112
  • "It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light of beauty, and measured out stages for her, that you might know the number of years and the count of time. Allah created this only in truth and righteousness. Thus He explains His Signs in detail, for those who understand. Truly, in the alternation of the night and the day, and in all that Allah has created, in the heavens and the earth, are signs for those who fear Him." 10:5-6

  • "Oh mankind! There has come to you a direction from your Lord and a healing for the diseases in your hearts - and for those who believe, a guidance and a Mercy. Say: 'In the bounty of Allah, and in His Mercy - in that let them rejoice.' That is better than the wealth they hoard." 10:57-58
  • "Say: 'Oh men! Now Truth has reached you from your Lord! Those who receive guidance, do so for the good of their own souls; those who stray, do so to their own loss. And I am not set over you to manage your affairs." 10:108

What is the main theme of this juz’?:

Surah Al-Tauba continues from the previous section, with a reminder about behavior during times of battle. Muslims are reminded to stand firm and not be cowardly when attacked. Muslims are reminded to stand true to their word, and are warned to watch out for hypocrites who promise one thing and do another. Allah rewards the believers who strive in His cause, and who persevere in the face of adversity.

Surah Yunus is named for the Prophet Yunus (Jonah), and Surah Hud is named for the Prophet Hud. The two chapters closely follow each other, and share a similar theme. As Makkan surahs, these chapters emphasize the Oneness of Allah. People are taught that Allah is the One who created and manages all things, and that He alone is worthy of our worship. After we die, there will be a Hereafter in which we will be rewarded or punished according to our beliefs and actions. The chapters contain descriptions of the Hereafter - the glory of heaven or the punishment of hellfire - in order to warn people of its reality. Everything that happens in our lives is a test. History has proven that messengers and prophets of Allah teach the same message, and repeatedly have been rejected by their people. A warning is given that we should not follow in these footsteps, which lead to ruin. The examples of previous prophets is given, including Noah, Moses, Aaron, and Jonah, as a reminder of the lessons of history.
