GOVT CONSIDERING EXTERNAL HELP FOR THIRD TERM LIMIT CASE

Guyana’s Attorney General, Basil Williams says the government is yet to make a decision as to whether it will retain external legal services to represent its appeal in the Presidential Third Term case that is currently before the Caribbean Court of Justice.

Williams also said while the government has already retained two Queen’s Counsels from Barbados to represent them in the GECOM matter, it is possible that their services may be extended to the presidential term limit case.

AG Basil Williams S.C.

However, the AG asserted that no decision has been taken as yet.

Following the 2015 General and Regional Elections, private citizen Cedrick Richardson filed a court case challenging the two-term limit imposed on Guyanese Presidents. Former acting Chief Justice Ian Chang had ruled that the presidential term-limit was unconstitutional without the approval of the people through a referendum.

The AG subsequently appealed the decision however former acting Chancellor of the Judiciary Justice Carl Singh, who led the panel of Appeal Court judges, upheld the High Court ruling, saying that the decision on the presidential term limits rested with the people via a referendum and not the National Assembly.

This move to retain external legal services comes on the heel of widespread criticisms of the performance of AG Basil Williams, who said last week that the two Queens Counsels Ralph Thorn and Hal Gallop serves to enrich the jurisprudence in the region.

The jagabaat already cause two defeat of the PPP but that's not enough, now he is going to hand the PNC victory in 2020 on a silver platter. The PNC just has to play along and give him the third term...

Didn't the constitution state specifically of a president's third term that this case has to prolong from Guyana to the Caribbean Court of Justice to challenge its interpretation? Is it lack of knowledge in our court system or just the legal hurdles playing out? Time is money and money can be used where it is most needed. If Jagdeo intends to run again, that is more punishment for Guyanese.

It is obvious that the government is not just going thru the motion. They are thinking of hiring high priced legal counsels to help the dunce Williams. If you and they thought that it was a guaranteed win because the matter was spelled out clearly in the constitution and that the Act of Parliament was the correct mechanism, then all of you have nothing to worry about.

To this time, Jagdeo has not indicated that he will run for the presidency in the 2020elections. Until then, you have nothing to worry about.

Here is your chance to run for president. I think that you might be able to do it sitting in the good USA!

Ramoutar was the person who ran for president, not any jagbatt who you fear so much that he is stuck up your backside and can't be flushed out even with a medical induced enema.

We know that. Jagdeo carries the fame of Burnham. His name takes precedent when we talk about the PPP. Yes, he indeed lost too much for the party and the country. He needs to be kicked out regardless of his selfish book sense and godey ego.

That's not literally true. That's coolie people "feel good" mentality to speak out of someone's shoes. People may respect him as a former head of state, but nobody is afraid of him. Granger hauls his ass to court for inciting racial unrest. If Ganger unleased his true power, Jagdeo will be sitting in a cage with Roger Khan. Let's be practical here!

Prince, last night I was watching a Movis Dogs Of War 1980, it brought back memories of 1980 Guyana under Bunall, Gadaha  Hammie and Corbin. Now I will have to look at Back TO THe Future!!!

The constitution is quite clear on not more than two consecutive terms to serve as president.

However, the constitution does not prohibit a person; having served two consecutive terms; to return at a later date to contest for the position.

Do you know the constitution is written in a way for more than one interpretation and loopholes? Jagdeo should drop the case if he has no intention of running again.

FM

There is absolutely nothing in the constitution which prohibits an individual to contest the position for president after serving two consecutive terms then; after a period of time; again contest for the position.

The constitution is clear that a person cannot contest for the position for three consecutive terms.

Jagdeo did not bring the case against the government so he cannot drop it. It was Richardson. I do not know of this individual but if you have info that he is acting for JSgdeo, please post it. I am certain that we will all appreciate it.

The individual and who instigate are mysterious.

Looking at the case brought by the individual challenging the

"Act 17 of 2001, which purports to amend the Constitution, allowing a person elected as President only two terms in office"

Jagdeo will be the beneficiary.

Jagdeo lost nothing since he was not the one running for president. You PNCites got the man stuck so far up your rectum that even a proctologist cannot help you.  Did you bottom feeders blame Obama for Hillary's loss?
