Jagdeo not interested in third term

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Former President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo has made it pellucid that he is not interested in being elected in office for a third term; putting to rest speculations from the Opposition and sections of society.

Jagdeo, in a statement through Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon, responded to a writ which was filed in the High Court on Monday, February 02 challenging the two term limit for the Presidency in Guyana.

Dr Luncheon told Reporters at a post cabinet media briefing on Wednesday, February 04 that the President “remains committed to not pursuing any further appointment to an elected constitutional office or post in Guyana.”

He explained that the motion appears to be a deliberate act to create uncertainty as Guyanese go to the polls on May 11.

Jagdeo is currently overseas and according to Dr Luncheon, the Former President views the issue as a matter of principle in keeping with the existing legislation.

The Cabinet Secretary reminded that this has been Jagdeo’s public position since he exited office in 2011, having served two terms.

A motion challenging the constitutional provision was brought by a Georgetown resident, Cedric Richardson.

Guyana’s Constitution states that a person elected as President after the year 2000 is eligible for re-election only once.

The motion names Attorney General, Anil Nandlall and Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman as respondents.

Jagdeo had a full head of hair when he was elected president. Upon leaving office, he was totally bald. Now his hair is growing back. That man sacrificed a lot for Guyanese. Don't you think so?

This may not be about making Jagdeo President (at least not now). This lawsuit would also make him eligible to be Prime Minister.

As I understand the Constitution, one cannot be appointed Prime Minister if one is ineligible to accede to the Presidency.

The effect of the Presidential term limit Act was also to bar the affected person from becoming Prime Minister.

It's good to know he has expressed his position. I believe Dr Luncheon and Conscience on this issue.

Dr?????? where did he earn that? No one uses Dr as a title when it is merely honorific.
