to solve the issues affecting the sugar industry. But he admitted yesterday, that indeed, the PPP regime should shoulder some of the blame for the prevailing sugar woes.
Jagdeo made this comment during a press conference held yesterday at Freedom House.
There, the former President was asked by Kaieteur News whether he felt that the PPP should essentially take some responsibility for the troubles facing the sugar sector since those problems did not start 17 months ago.
The Opposition leader said, β€œOn the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), I agree. I agree absolutely with what you are saying that the troubles with GuySuCo started some time back and a lot of it had to do with the cuts in the European Union prices where we lost about US$40M per annum of revenue.”
Jagdeo added, β€œBut when the Government decided to close the Wales Sugar Estate, I said to them that we are prepared to sit and talk about the future of the industry because we believe that it has a future.”
The Opposition Leader said that he is still open to talks with the government once they have a serious approach that is not political or a product of some Cabinet Committee.

The current price for sugar on the world market is $.22 per lb.  Why can't Guyana make a profit or at least breakeven on sugar?

Cost of production is the issue, this is nothing new from since Colonial Times the British Planters were getting preferential prices to offset cost.

The Industry need to add value added products to offset the loss in the prices, the former gov't knew there will be an end to the special prices, the didn't start the process to offset the lost as such the Industry got and are getting bail out from the Government, this is a heavy burden on the coffers of the gov't.

Sugar is the quintessential food and industrial product. We just have to use it to fill its natural niche with byproducts. If we do not diversify the product base instead of trying to sell raw sugar we miss the maximum utility of its potential as an income earner.

Who is "we" ? When Granger came seeking your support recently, you ran for cover.  Why don't you implement some of these grandiose plans of yours by actually putting skin in the game?

Instead of telling others what to do why don't you take your family's tremendous wealth and do good for humanity.

That is the job of your govt which you now abandoned when Granger came looking for help. These idiots you put in office have their hands on the nation's coffers and instead of helping the people they chose to fill their pockets wit 50% raises and finance sport and wine down for their supporters.

No wonder your mother banished you to live in the USA.
