Former President, Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo has criticised the coalition’s approach to turn its back on the sugar industry at a time in need instead of investing in the sector to keep it viable as the former Administration did to the bauxite industry when it was failing.
Government is moving full force ahead in shutting down the sugar estates with hundreds of workers already receiving their letters of termination from both the Enmore and Rose Hall Estates. This adds to the hundreds who are already on the breadline after the closure of the Wales Estate.

The Opposition Leader, Mr. Jagdeo pointed out in the National Assembly though, that the Government can take the alternative route and support the sector like the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) did when the bauxite industry was failing to ensure the welfare of the persons under its employ are protected. The bauxite industry is based in Linden in Region 10.

In explaining the difference in approach to two similar situations, Jagdeo reminded that the PPP/C kept the industry alive through multi-million dollar investments up until around 2002 when it managed to get Bossai to invest in the sector.

Mr. Jagdeo said the PPP/C could just have easily closed the industry but noted that he could not have done that given that it was the only source of employment for people in Linden at that time.

He explained that for those who were unable to remain in the industry, the PPP/C opened up opportunities for jobs in the area.

The Leader of the Opposition reminded that a business incubator was set up to help persons access cheaper loans, that a road to the farmlands was built, a call centre was constructed and that there was built a bettee syndicate arrangement with the miners and loggers.

Mr. Jagdeo noted too that the PPP/C invested heavily in housing, water infrastructure, health and education – all of which created jobs. He also noted that the town received more than $30B in electricity subsidies under the years of PPP/C rule.

Mr. Jagdeo contended that that’s how a visionary government deals with situations of that nature.

The Opposition Leader contended that there is no evidence based decision to close the industry as no impact or social risk assessment studies were done. As such, he contended that the decision to close the estates is a political one.

“They want the sugar workers to believe that they loved them and that they acted in their best interest and that’s why they had to fire them because of this intense love,” he stated.

Who on GNI knows why Linden used to get free electricity from the Bauxite Company.May be DG can chime in.

The topic of subsidized electricity have been discussed a few time on GNI.

Good of Jagdeo to remind us what the PPP government did for Linden bauxite workers. Didn't know that.

Yet my buddy Carib claims that Jagdeo hates black people and took away their livelihood in Linden.

What say you caribJunk about Jagdeo's rebuttal? You claimed that the PPP was heartless in their treatment of Blacks.

Yes he sold Guymine to foreigners who promptly fired 80% of the workers.  He then allowed Chinese to treat Guyanese like slaves, even after they protested this treatment.  He allowed the Chinese to destroy the roads out of Kwakwani, after they protested.  He did nothing to force the Chinese to create more value added in Linden, which would have allowed former bauxite workers to transition to these new industries.

No one wants to buy Guysuco and so how long does he think that the government can afford to bail out an industry that he DESTROYED.  Sugar is DEAD, so who will buy it? Why doesn't Jagdeo reveal potential buyers if he thinks that they exist?

Jagdeo was warned by the Europeans to transform sugar as their was no longer going to be guaranteed prices and markets for ACP sugar. Jagdeo cussed them down and squandered money on an ill-fated Skeldon.

1.  did Jagdeo try to diversify Guysuco away from bulk sugar for the EU? No.

2. Did he try to privatize Guysuco as he did Guymine?  No because he knew full well that these owners would have similarly fired large numbers of sugar workers and he didn't think this tenable given that sugar workers are the PPP base.

Jagdeo needs to stop screaming as if this Guysuco problem is new. When TK and other s tried to speak sense they were derided as Indian haters and epithets flung their way.

Now that it is too late to save sugar and Jagdeo can see an opportunity to hasten what seems to be the inevitable race war he engages in this.

Linden is a mess, with massive unemployment and massive poverty, much of this arising from the fact that the majority of those who worked in bauxite were fired, and no comparable industry was encouraged.  It is NOT a thriving economic center and so Jagdeo needs to cease with his LIES.

Rather than utilize the cheap electricity which exists in that town to facilitate new industries, he joined the racist campaign of  Ramotar whose goons shot Lindeners in cold blood, when they protested against the only concession that they received to offset the problems that a privatized Guymine cost them.

Linden could have become a thriving industrial zone given its dense pool of skilled workers, in fact the densest pool that exists in Guyana.

And what did Jagdeo do when 80% of the workers lost their jobs? What incentives did he provide to attract new industries to that town?

You with your Indo KKK self can swallow Jagdeo lies but others know better.

Jagdeo ABANDONED bauxite workers and now cries when APNU plans to do the same thing to sugar workers.

Didn't he when he sold bauxite, guaranteeing to destroy Linden.  Having destroyed the economy of that town that silly business incubator was a cruel joke.  Is it that everyone would become vendors?

The rest of you need to ask him why didn't the PPP prepare the sugar workers for the inevitable, given that sugar is DEAD.  Guyana sugar could have only survived with high prices from the EU.  This no longer exists.  No one is going to buy expensive sugar from Guyana.

Sugar is DEAD thanks to Jagdeos' arrogant incompetence.  Give it a decent burial!

I suggest that folks have the decency to research posts made by TK on this very topic 10 years ago.  Note the rampant abuse he took by telling the TRUTH and that was Guyana as a supplier of bulk sugar had come to an END.  This 10 years ago when Jagdeo squandered funds on that Skeldon fiasco against the advice of people like TK.

It doesn't matter what good Jagdeo's government did for the people of Linden, Caribnj's answer would be the same, they spit on the hands that feed them. Caribny is bent on degrading the Jagdeo era, just like Django you two have a personal vendetta against Jagdeo, you only see the storm and fail to see the rainbow. You guys need lots of help, GNI can't solve your problems. I can expect a negative answer for speaking the TRUTH.

What good did BJ do other than what he said he did..which is bullshit? If he did any good we would have heard of this good everytime Carib posted of the problems in Linden. Instead, no one heard of any good other than cheap/free electricity which stuck in the craws of BJ's supporters.

Perhaps this govt shoud give free electricity to the sugar workers...this would make them oh so happy nuh?

You are no different than Carib, an Indian Basher and Hater. The facts can be glaring in front of you, yet you can't see. The haters of Jagdeo is more jealousy , him being a Young Coolie being a president of a country with Six Races and did WELL, he was elected by the majority of the electorates. Yes, he lived a good life, built a big house, maybe, he should have live a humble life, but shipped his wealth overseas like what many have done in this government.

K

You can call me whatever you wish if it feels good doing so.

It is possible the PPP is getting something come back to bite them for leaving a corrupted person to run their party into the ground, it is the word u guys keep using in your everyday lingo here, "karma"

Jealousy is a terrible thing. They do not want to see Indos live a good life. Indos will save up their money while some of them will fete and be begging to borrow a $ 500 dollar on Monday morning. I have seen this time and time again.

They love freeness , when Burnham give Linden free electricity in 1976 , it was Guysuco workers who was paying to support the whole country from frogein exchange . They found out Linden was consuming twice the amount of electricity on the grid per house hold compare the who was paying for same .

Afro Guyanese depends on the hands out that it mentally shackled  them to laziness . Linden is paying 12-15 $ per kilowatt hour while the rest of country is  paying $ 65.

In 2012 when ppp try to inplement a minimum increase , their was riot . So essentially they were rioting for Indians to pay their electricity .

when Indo was brought to Guyana , they were quickly put to stabilize the economy and the continue until today , while the black slaves who came from the Caribbean including Chinese and Portuguese were quickly shield away .
