Inaugural ‘Top Ten’ Educational Scheme hosted by RHTY&SC Cricket Teams

The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC), and its eight cricket teams recently held their first ever Top Ten Educational Scheme to honour the outstanding top students for Region Six at the recent National Grade Six Exams.
The programme was held at the St. Francis Community Developers Training Hall with Speaker of the National Assembly delivering the keynote speech.
Addressing an audience of over 400 club members, special invitees and students, Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster informed that the main objective of the Club is to ensure that every youth fulfills his/her potential in sports, education and culture.
The Club, he stated decided to host the awards as it was very impressed with the performances of schools in Region Six and announced that it would become an annual event. Despite being mainly a cricket club, the RHTY&SC operates the largest Say No/Say Yes Programme for an NGO in Guyana as it strives to get youths to Say No to Drugs, Crime, Suicide, Alcohol and Yes to Education, Religion, Life and Sports.
The Top Ten Awards was sponsored solely by the eight cricket teams and each of the awardees received a trophy, medal, framed certificate and educational materials.
Noting that Education is the key to a successful future, the veteran Club Administrator urged the youths to develop a culture of reading, research and listening.
Secondary School, he stated is far different than Primary School and there would be temptation to follow the wrong path. Foster advised the attentive youths to choose their friends carefully as true friends do not encourage you to skip school, to consume alcohol, to engage in pre marital sex or to be disrespectful to your elders.
He said that the club was willing to assist students if needed and pledged to invest even more in the educational sector. Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton Scotland spoke widely on the importance of Education and the linkage of youths, education and sports.
Dr. Scotland congratulated the awardees and urged them to remain focus on their school work.
The Top Ten students of Region Six are Matthew Ramlochan – Belvedere Primary, Yadram Totaram – No. 56 Primary, John Ramdin – Cumberland Primary, Allyssa Griffith – Cropper Primary, Denish Somai – Tain Primary, Dimitri Williams – All Saints Primary, Sherisa Chaturi – Port Mourant Primary, Nick Rama – Crabwood Creek Primary, Purnima Totaram – Sheet Anchor Primary and Medeina Lionel – All Saints Primary. The top students will attend Queen’s College, will were awarded Bishop’s High School while has earned a place at St. Stanislaus College.
The eight cricket teams in September would be hosting a Region 6 Top Teachers Programme where close to $500,000 worth of trophies, medals, certificates and cash prizes would be distributed to six outstanding teachers.
The top teachers at both the Primary and Secondary levels would receive $100, 000 each while the 1st Runner-up would get $50,.000 each and 3rd place, $25,000 each. The eight teams are Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Metro Females and Gizmos & Gadgets Under-21 and First Division.
