Very good , but unfortunately APNU  is the one writing the speeches for the campaign.

Kari.  Good to set the stage but APNU AFC have to overcome the malaise and cynicism which has set in.  Many expected more from them when they began to control parliament, and yet the PPP are behaving even worse then before.

 

APNU AFC need to draw a vision, tailored to the audiences which they are addressing.

 

1.  Solutions for Linden.

 

2.  Solutions for the rice farmers.

 

3.  Solutions for the sugar industry.

 

4.  Solutions for high unemployment/under employment facing the youths.

 

5.  Improved infrastructure, focus on quality (rather than quantity) primary/secondary education, and greater emphasis on tertiary level training.

 

6.  Better local gov't (followed by LGE) to allow grass roots Guyanese to have greater say in the running of their communities.

 

7.  Higher value added for Guyana's agricultural, mining, and forestry sectors to jump start the manufacturing sector and stimulate the urban economies.

 

 

Etc, etc, etc.

 

Its best to have others  play the dirty tricks (third party proxies), especially reminding rural Indians that they blacks who they most fear are with the PPP.  I don't know how possible that will be in Guyana but it allows the fear factor to be played, while freeing those on the campaign trail to focus on the positive message.

I suggest the less said about that the better.  APNU AFC haven't done a good job since the controlled parliament.

 

Which PPP thief has been identified?  What has any one done about the rampant abuse and law breaking by PPP officials?  This is what people are asking.

 

 

Well, their track record is mixed on calling out these financial abuses. APNU as the more senior partner could have done some more heavy lifting. You're also right that it is going to be difficult to make the leap from what they've done in Parliament to campaigning on the corruption front.

Capital will be needed to fund a lot of the programs Caribny outlined. It has to be a lot of private capital - local and mostly foreign.

 

Underlying the thrust of Caribny's points are training (vocational and educational) and infrastructure. Fiscal and monetary incentives will take care of the rest.

 

Linden is a longer-term project for industrialization  - infrastructure (electrical and electronic) and retraining.

 

Organic sugar is highly marketable and packaging should be a focus. The sugar industry is also a source for other down-stream products.

 

rice is a mainstay and restructuring ofr efficiencies should be emphasized.

 

The opposition coalition has a lot to run on - both positive campaigning and negative where it resonates with ordinary people.

 

The mediocre record of APNU AFC in parliament is why they must create a LOUD vision of progress, in addition to dirty tricks tactics of reminding the population about who is in bed with the PPP (House of Israel), and the rampant criminal behavior perpetuated by the PPP.

 

I guess one factor in their favor is how corrupted the judiciary has become by the PPP. Many initiatives by the opposition to control PPP expenditures were blocked by the courts, because the courts have become arms of the PPP.

 

A big part of their plank has to be to deal with the need to ensure that the judiciary is independent of influence.  This also plays into discussion about rampant crime, which clearly bothers most Guyanese.

 

So they can excuse their mediocre record by the fact that they were stymied in their efforts by the existing power structure.

What APNU AFC have to offer is that they will be innovative in developing solutions.  That they will be open and communicative with the population.  That they will put in place controls, and increase transparency, all with a view of reducing the ability of powerful interests to coopt the system to suit their narrow interests.

 

The hall mark of the PPP is their notion that the population at large are charity cases who must be given fish.  APNU AFC should preach that their role will be to work with the population to teach them how to catch bigger fish.  Guyanese need to learn that government's role is to work WITH them, not to tell them what to do.

Kari demonstrated his campaign skills for the coalition, but that leads to a theory of winning. Unfortunately, many voters already decided who they will vote for. A mere 10% of the voters decided on election day.

The purpose of campaigning is to inspire people. You have to have them want to aspire to a different level than they're accustomed.

 

The key is to put yourself in their feet and see what they want to hear that will make their circumstances better.

 

The average Guyanese will not want to hear if you get into government you will do so and so. You have to have them FEEL something. They know of all the PPP's shenanigans and they know their dire circumstances. So armed with those two elements how do you move them to change?

 

Bad-mouthing the government won't cut it unless the bad-mouth touches them. The other half is to make them feel good about you. Okay the two deficits are (i) the PNC's history and (ii) the opposition's lack of putting the sword to the PPP in Parliament other than causing a proroguing of Parliament and new elections.

 

They know there is no knight in shining armor, no manna from heaven to make Guyana like a Trinidad when it comes to manufacturing and so on. They look and see Moses and Granger. Then they see the devil they know - Ramoutar and company. Look at what Putin is doing in Russia (running it into the ground and assassinating opponents and thieving) and yet people are flocking to him. The PPP has a Putin-like reverence among 50% of the voters.

 

you have to tie in the negatives about the PPP to their disconfort and at the same time let them see hope in you. Bingo! Now go out and do it combined AFC-APNU!

1.  They already know of the evils of the PPP.  Repeating that, without any additional content just breeds increased cynicism.  Yes those sitting on the fence do need to be reminded that the House of Israel is with the PPP, and that people connected to the PPP have broken the law.

 

2.  65k voters no longer vote.  This is because they no longer see politics as being relevant to their lives.  They see parliament as a forum where over fed politicians bicker.  THEY WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN IT FOR THEM!  You feed their emotions by generating a sense of hope, openness, transparency and accountability.  This is done by outlining plans about what you plan to do. 

 

3.  90% of the voters have already decided who they will support.  The people who will determine the election will be those sitting on the fence (alienated PPP supporters) and those who don't vote (alienated PNC supporters. Amerindians, and youth from all races).

 

Bottom line is that Guyanese are sick and tired of bickering and political nastiness.  They don't see how that benefits them, or the nation as a whole. 

 

Many who voted for the opposition parties are frustrated by the fact that they didn't/couldn't restrain the PPP from its blatant corruption, arrogance, and criminality.  So these who think that the increasingly negative image of the PPP, even amongst its own supporters, automatically translates into votes for APNU AFC fool themselves.

 

Please note that emotion, based on nastiness, just feeds the base, and gets them more frenzied.  But then these are the people who aren't going to shift their votes so why the focus on them.  In Guyana the frenzied base do vote.

 

The focus has to be on people who aren't part of the base, and who are disgusted with politics as practiced in Guyana.  These are the people who will be most open to shifting their vote, or turning out to vote, if they haven't done so recently.  These are the people who will carry APNU AFC to victory.

 

While it is often mentioned that the PPP need only get an additional 5k votes to win, imagine the impact of the 65k people who stopped voting after 2001, actually showing up to vote.  People like these rarely vote for the incumbent party.

Yes 30-40k will decide on election day.  You do know that if many of these are people who haven't voted since 2001 it doesn't look good for the PPP.

 

APNU is good for 40%.  The PPP for 45%.  This based on their hard core support base.

 

But that still leaves both parties short of victory, and a whole number of people to court.
