Made a few Guyana style with head and tongue. Used wooden dowels from home depot, tissue paper and watered down Elmer's glue. Actually flew well.

What type tissue paper? That stuff aint that strong is it? Is it the gift wrap paper with various print?

I wonder how saran wrap would hold up?

It's the one you can get at any Stationary or Crafts store. Comes in different colors. Strength would depend on how big a kite you're making and the design. Mine have the Star (starpoint) design so the inner thread supports the paper. Largest I have made would be about 16 inches high. I still have a couple. I'll take pictures when I get home.

My first year in TO we made a 5' one with kraft paper with Sunshine girls glued to it. Darn thing was a pain to get up..we flew it up North for a bit but haven't made any since then.

Our fren James was cremated  and his ashes were buried near his  wife and parents in the church cemetery, near his village.

Another friend from NY, who volunteer closely with James at Brickdam Cathedral/GT, visited his grave site  recently.

I always enjoy James company, especially when he visited his homeless friends in Georgetown.  A wonderful man.  

Made this one today with my kid. Because he is a traditionalist, he wanted pink and blue since he said those are Easter colors. I stuck in the red and green to make it a bit more vibrant. Now we have the Easter and Christmas colors on one kite. Brother Keith will appreciate my little gesture here.

Did not know that he passed away. When did he ?

 

James passed on a few months ago. His family, also sisters and brothers, from Canada, NY, UK and other parts of Europe were at the funeral. James was their last immediate family in Guyana.  

When I saw him a few weeks before he passed on, he was very weak and could not walk unaided  on flat ground, much less on stairs.

He  was looked after by persons from  the Brickdam Cathedral  where he had strong contacts, especially the bishop and some of our friends at the Cath. Standard.

Most of his family lives in your city and GNI Django  is a close relative. I know the children since childhood.  Two younger boys graduated from Vancouver UBC  and I met them last at GNI Mara's home in North Vancouver.

I spoke with Mara's brother recently  and  unfortunately Mara  is still in bed with a disabling stroke at North Vancouver Lions Gate Hospital and unable to speak.       

Its sad about Mara

It is indeed very sad to see Mara in this condition.  With a message that we must not take life and relationships for granted, because our  health and situation could change in an instant.  

Mara  was a  vibrant real estate salesperson  in Vancouver and their West Indian restaurant was doing really well. Many of us ate there during their  daughter's wedding.

Mara never forgot his friends. He was always available to meet someone at the airport and take them out for a delicious lunch or supper. 

For  a guy who came from isolated Mara, near Hibury, behind New Amsterdam,  he did really well for himself. His daughter's wedding in 2006 was one of the biggest in Vancouver. I was privileged to be a photographer at the wedding  and ride in the limo with their family to the Mandir. Before and after the wedding the party seems to be going on and on and on. The guests were given homemade  Italian  and ice wine to take home.

The wedding spinoff  was a  visit  to  the village of Mara and Hibury in 2007 with Errol A and his wife, during world cricket in Guyana.

Even though he is unable to speak, his brain seems to be active and it must be torture for him just lying in bed.

We had a friend from Fiji with a brain tumour, in almost similar situation as Mara. When we visited, she always grabbed my arm and begged me to get her a gun.    

Get well soon Marabai, your present situation does not suit your vibrant life style  and your friends miss you.    

I pray that Mara will still fully recover.

Mara invited Paul & I to his daughter; unfortunately we could not attend, so I graciously declined the invitation. 

I used to speak to him before I got ill.
