More leaked emails from Alliance for Change (AFC) executives show that several key figures did not agree with President David Granger’s unilateral selection of Justice James Patterson as the Guyana Elections Commission Chairman on October 19.

The discussion among executives was conducted via email following the AFC’s statement on October 20 that it had supported Granger’s move. The discussion involved both local and North American executives.

“In my view, the AFC public disclosure of `We played no part in the process… yet… we support the decision to avoid a constitutional crisis’ Really! This position makes the AFC looks weak and impotent. You are seen by the common man as being treated as a step child or a poodle in the coalition,” Chairman of the United States Chapter, Dr Rohan Somar thundered in the email.

“The excuse that the AFC (supports) the unilateral (decision) to avoid a `constitutional crisis’ is a hollow excuse. You were already in a constitutional crisis with the continued delays in the GECOM and for variety of other reasons,” he added.

Executives Cathy Hughes, Dominic Gaskin and David Patterson also expressed their views on the decision.

Gaskin said that the decision was entirely the President’s as catered for by the constitution but also faulted the President for not frontally dealing with criticisms made by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo from the beginning of the process.

The party has faced internal and external attacks over its support for  Granger’s unilateral appointment.

The AFC’s Canada branch has pulled its support from the party until its concerns are addressed.

This morning, Chairman of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan told reporters that he questions the sincerity of the persons behind the release of the mails but was glad that that they were made public as that demonstrated the liberal and democratic rights his party’s members have in voicing their opinions.

“I do not see any damage flowing from a frank discussion with members who want to know our position. If leaders are not frank with our membership we won’t be an accountable party. There will be that and there will also be rogue elements in parties and that is what happened here. They do not like a decision we endorsed and they made, just two of them (Tameshwar) Lilmohan and Laurence Williams, that they will abandon us. The entire group is intact. And because I had shared emails with them on how and what happened and so on they are now leaking the emails. I don’t understand how that is responsible membership of a party by people who are educated and qualified. But that is what it is, it is a liberal and democratic party and what can we do?” he said.

“The thinking process of executives will always be discussed by emails …and they are meant to be private. If they are not that would be the way of the world. This is a liberal democratic party. You can cuss Ramjattan, you can cuss Raphael but we are not going to take disciplinary action. In any event they have left…and if that is what they want to do then fine,” he added.

Stabroek News was told by a party executive that it has various mediums in which it communicates including emails, Facebook and an AFC Whatsapp chat group.

“We have private discussions there and we have disagreements, argue and use some bad words and all of that. But isn’t that what democracy is about? Do they see anyone from the PPP, even when they leave, release private information where other persons involved were not even consulted before their views are expressed? No and you won’t. You have to also ask the persons who released the emails to share their own views on not only this but other matter and then you will see,“ the executive said.

“Our NEC discussed this issue of the released emails and GECOM decision but you know, the privacy aspect dominated that discussion. One must ask why the releaser of the emails is doing it now and why. Is that person still a part of the AFC? It seems like someone has an axe to grind and that axe has nothing to do with the GECOM and Patterson being there,” the executive added.

The Indo KKK 3 years later still cannot believe that they can no longer scream "ahbe pan tap, blackman time done".

I recall that when D2 warned them that changing ethnic demography suggested that the PPP could no longer assume victory based on an ethnic base and that they had better listen to the black/mixed population which at the time felt excluded.  Loud jeers, and screams that no blackman will ever be president again.

Then May 2015 happened and the world came to an end.........yuji/cobra fleeing in terror into their homes fearful of encountering big Amazonian PNC females. Wailing that "dem strang blackman gun do whatever dey want and nobody cyant tell dem anyting".

Now the wails because vengeful elements within the PNC are reigning the same exclusionary tactics that the PPP did to these people especially between 2000-15.  At least Jagan embraced tokenism with his Civic Bantustan.

Dr Rohan Somar is maybe the biggest financier to the AFC, and given the amount of money he has given them , for sure he must have some clout . If The US and Canada AFC chapter pulls out, then AFC Guyana will dismantle , the glue is money.

Intelligent persons in the AFC are not robots. They openly question and disagree with party decisions. As do ordinary members and supporters. Bottom line: the AFC leadership messed themselves up in, firstly, advising Granger to pick a GECOM Chairman arbitrarily, and then publicly declaring full support for Patterson. Naturally, this latest action is costing the AFC as more members flee.

FM

What I do not understand is that they know that they sent out the emails but then lied about not being involved in the decision by Granger to unilaterally name Patterson as Chairman of GECOM. Are they that forgetful, or think that we are stupid or believe that they can lie and get away with it?

And if they flee to the PPP thinking that Jagdeo is more democratic and interested in a revision of the constitution, they are either stupid, naïve, or long to be back in the tribe.

They should instead be involved in mobilizing civic society and demanding that urgent attention be placed on revision of the constitution. And that at least a partial revision should be in place prior to the next election. One curbing the powers of the president and holding the president liable in all capacities for all actions that they undertake.  And ensuring that the process of administering the election be removed from anyone nominated by any politician.  A cadre of professionals should be developed to be held responsible for this.

But jumping into the Jagdeo camp means that either people are stupid or dishonest because in none of Jagdeo's screams is there any demand for any revision made to this constitution.  We should remember that he once screamed that Guyana had the most advanced constitution in the English speaking Caribbean.

Ponder on the reasons why Jagdeo claimed his pride in the Burnham constitution!

Since you are suggesting that Gilly ponder on something, you should ponder on this. While there are terrible parts of Burnham's wicked constitution, Jagdeo still had enough decency to resist grabbing on the terrible parts of it. Granger on the other hand, may have decided from May 15, 2015 that he intend to hold firm to those parts. So Granger is worse than Jagdeo and when it is a binary choice one is smarter to move to the PPP camp than the PNC one. Therefore Gilly is not stupid or naïve. He is smart.

Speaking of stupid or naïve, why do PNC supporters support the PNC?

Ponder on the reasons why Jagdeo claimed his pride in the Burnham constitution!

1. There might be many be many reasons why the AFC supporters leave the AFC, maybe not one single reason, maybe an accumulation until the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.  Until someone actually say or some reputable poll suggests that people leaving the AFC say they prefer Jagdeo because of his promise  to revise the constitution, this is just speculation on your part.

2. You do know that changing the constitution, especially the significant parts of it demands the agreement of both major parties because of the requirements imposed in the Burnham dictatorshiop constitution. You were blaming Jagdeo and the PPP. Now blame Granger and the PNC.

3. Many thought that they were part of the process of change when they opted for the AfC. Some of the people moved from civic mobilization into the AFC. Instead they got a bunch of self serving liars who desperately hold on the power as conditions force them to eat the political, promises they made to their supporters. So, blame the politicians, especially in this case the Granger government and the AFC.

4. Well, where will you find those non political individuals. This is puerile thinking on your part, especially when you have been ranting about all Indo Guyanese are looking at things through their racial lens and the same might be equally applicable at Afro Guyanese.

5, I thought it one's democratic right to vote for whom so ever the person want to. Classifying  those who move to the PPP as ignorant or stupid and attributing the move as being due to the constitution is poor scholarship, is disrespectful of people's rights to choose and seems to indicate dictatorial tendencies.

Z

Gilbakka has said repeatedly here that the Guyana Constitution cries out for overhauling. Even as I say this, I know in my heart and soul that a revamped constitution will not reduce racialism in the society. You cannot legislate a change of entrenched prejudice and bigotry from above.

Moving on, this morning the press is reporting that the AFC has submitted a name to Granger, at his request, to fill the vacancy in GECOM arising from Ms Jones' passing. The AFC nominee is Trevor Williams. Granger will appoint him without doubt.

Although Bharrat Jagdeo had submitted the names of 6 non-Indians among 18 to Granger for the GECOM Chairman post, pro-PNC individuals and groups attacked him vehemently for submitting a "racial" list. So, what do we have now?

PNC-dominated APNU+AFC have James Patterson, Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Trevor Williams. Not a single Indo.

PPP has Bibi Shaddick, Robeson Benn and Sase Gunraj, ie 2 Indos and 1 Afro. Pick sense from nonsense, who is more racial: Granger or Jagdeo?

I wonder if Granger will ignore the AFC submission and unilaterally appoint an indo to match up with the Opposition's GECOM composition. Lets see how he feels about Social Cohesion. He preaches it. Lets see if he practices what he preaches.
