As the November 26 semi-finals of the Hamilton Green Knockout Cup Football Tournament approaches, the host community of Linden is already guaranteed a spot in the final.
Which of their teams will reach the final will be answered when Winners Connection square off against Mile Rock in the feature semi-final clash, but before that, the rampaging Guyana Police Force tackle Soesdyke for the other spot to contest the championship game set for November 30, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
According to Co-ordinator Lennox Arthur, the prospect of a Linden versus Georgetown final is real since the two teams from the bauxite community will face each other in the preceding round, while the other encounter will be a battle between Georgetown teams.
With over $1million in total prize monies up for grabs, all for remaining teams according to word emanating from the respective camps have intensified preparations ahead of the impending showdown and fans could expect two riveting encounters that will certainly underline what is in store for the traditional rivalry between the two communities.
Police, many will have to agree, will start as favourites against Soesdyke, but the mere fact that their opponents have reached this stage indicate that they should not be underestimated.
Police will be led by the experienced Dwain Jacobs, who was recently recalled to the national team, while his support will come from Kester Dundas, Lescharles Critchlow, Steffon Ramsay, Dwayne Wilson and the in-form Darrius Frank between the uprights.
Soesdyke’s chances of progressing will depend on the services of Trayon Khan, Colin McLean, Tyrell Khan, Alvin Batson, Colin Holder and Kelson Benson.
In the All-Linden affair, predicting the outcome is a difficult proposition since both teams have been playing well.
Winners Connection are loaded with talent with the likes of Rawle Gittens, Marmalique Davidson and Keon Sears, all lethal and proven goalscorers, while Trakel Thomas and Derrol Dainty are the forces at the back.
On the other hand, Joel McKinnon, Denzil Fordyce, Nellon Walcott and Lorenzo Miller will have the responsibility of setting up any chance Milerock may have to advance.
Oswald Benjamin and Akeem Green will have the arduous task of containing the likes of Gittens, Sears and Davidson.
The two encounters have all the markings of a blockbuster evening at the Mecca for football in the Region.
The winning team will receive $500,000 and the Ministry of Citizenship trophy, while the runner-up takes home $250,000 and the Busta trophy.
The third and fourth placed finishers will walk away with $150,000 and $100,000 along with trophies donated by John Fernandes Ltd and Cummings Electrical respectively.
Meanwhile, all FIFA rules will be in play.
