A Guyana-born notorious drug smuggler, who was arrested following a shootout with U.S. Marshals in Queens, was on the run for more than two decades and went to bed in a bullet-proof vest with two guns on his pillow, police and sources said yesterday.
According to the New York Daily News, Oswald Lewis, 44, has been wanted since he was indicted for conspiracy to distribute cocaine in April 1991 in Virginia, officials said.
He was turning in for the night donned in a bulletproof vest with two handguns, a .40-caliber Taurus and 9-mm. Ruger, on his pillow when Marshals burst into the Springfield Gardens apartment where he was holed up around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Lewis responded in a flash, guns blazing in both hands.
Two Marshals returned fire and wounded Lewis in the left hand.
He fled to the backyard where he fired on NYPD detectives serving as back up.
He fired about a dozen shots, emptying both guns, before tossing his weapons and surrendering, sources and witnesses said.
No law enforcement officers were injured and Lewis’ weapons were both recovered.
The apartment appears to be vacant and Lewis may have been squatting there, a source said.
Lewis is recovering at Jamaica Hospital and will be brought to Brooklyn Federal Court to face charges.
“The wound that he suffered, while its non-life threatening, it’s relatively severe,” said U.S. Marshals Assistant Chief Jim Elcik. “There may be some nerve damage.”
Marshals recently got a tip that Lewis was in the city and traced him to the flop apartment on 175th St.
The New York daily news said that the Guyana native was arrested twice since the warrant was issued for him in 1991, but both times he was released before authorities realized his true identity.
Maryland State Police arrested Lewis for possession, smuggling and distribution of cocaine on May 14, 1993. Using false ID, he posted bond and a warrant for his arrest was issued later that year, when he failed to return to court.
North Carolina highway patrol cops busted Lewis on Jan. 31, 1995, for trafficking cocaine but he again presented a false ID and posted bond before authorities realized his true identity, officials said. Police there issued a warrant for his arrest for bail jumping when he failed to returned to court.
Investigators do not believe he feared the feds after two decades on the run, a source said.
They suspect he was heavily armed and wearing body armor Tuesday because he had enemies on the street.
“He was worried about somebody other than law enforcement,” the source said.

It's ok to accuse the PPP of drug smuggling etc; but it's not ok to accuse the opposition? The opposition must be living at the vatican.

You are talking garbage here. Show me in this article where the PPP is implicated or referenced. Let's stick to this article ok? This was how the PNC financed their elections and this is how they still raise their funds. All overseas transactions.

The AFC is yet to tell us where the got the funds from to pay Dick Morris' hefty fees. This little party from inception has been off-shoot from the PNC. Moses brought them some votes. This time around he won't be able to bring significant votes to the AFC. Moses has become a pariah in Berbice and the country as whole. There will be a higher or perhaps the highest voter turnout in PPP strongholds than ever before to save Guyana from faliing into the hands of the PNC. People of this country has once again lost confidence in  the third force. The UF was a powerful third force but went to wayside when the PNC established dictatorship. The AFC has already suffered the same fate. We will see reality when the elections are held and the results are announced. The AFC and the PNC are in for a shock. There will be call for a new leader of the PNC. The AFC will hop along until it's time to call it quits. The party is in a crisis at this moment. Everything is being done to portray an image of strength. They are weak and will soon fall on their butts.

He looks like PNC's Fineman's right hand man.

Fineman was Roger Khan's right hand man they were both in bed with the PPP. Where was fineman hiding? in plain sight in Roger Khan's house.

Do some more research rather than talking crap whole day.

DIck Morris possibly got paid by those who cared to facilitate the emergence of the AFC as a mediating force in the socitey. It does not mean he had to be funded by drug earnings.

Moses is a Pariah only in your mind. The man does not speak with the forked tongue of a Ramotar or Jagdeo. The People in berbice knows at whose feet are the blame for the compounding misery. They will tell you in an instant it is inability to penetrate the layer of government to get anything done since the society functions on nepotism not merit. Only PPP cronies hold office and the work only to satisfy their masters not the people.

The PPP realize the winter of discontent is come to their houses. It is the reason they are trying mediate their pending  return as a minority government in a worse position with these numbskull proclamations of inclusive government when they speak only to their native support base.
