ANOTHER WOMAN JUMPS TO DEATH OFF DEMERARA HARBOUR BRIDGE

NEWS SOURCE, JANUARY 27 --- Crews attached to the Demerara Harbour Bridge launched a search in the Demerara River close to the bridge after a woman leaped to her death from the bridge.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon just after 3 o’ clock.  According to the General Manager at the Bridge, Rawlston Adams, workers received reports that there was a woman who appeared “suicidal” walking along the bridge close to the edge. Security was immediately dispatched to verify the reports.

The woman was spotted and while being approached by security, she jumped overboard. He body disappeared under the murky brown water of the river close to Span 9 of the bridge.

Up to late Tuesday afternoon, the body had not been recovered. Management at the Bridge were reviewing security video recording to ascertain a description of the woman and the clothes she was wearing.

Investigations are underway.

In December last year, another woman jumped to her death off the bridge. Her relatives said she suffered from depression and a mental disorder.

Guyana has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

This is a very sad story.

The current suicide rate in Guyana is unacceptable. The government of Guyana must accept some responsibility here.

Guyana needs an all party, non partial approach in addressing this epidemic.

I have a more few things to say on this matter and will do so boldly after the election is over.

Guyana's high suicide rate is not a partisan political issue. It is a massive social problem. Indeed, a multi-party, multi-pronged strategy and tactics must be undertaken with urgency.

is this true? Did not see it on the news

Suicide epidemic hits President’s extended family

Guyana’s suicide epidemic has hit the family of President Ramotar with the death of his 16-year old niece who took her life last week on the West Demerara.

Roma Ramotar was the President’s brother’s daughter who lived with her mother in a humble home in Cornelia Ida. She was a 5th form student at Stewartville secondary school and was said to be having relationship issues at the time. She was buried at the Uitvlugt pasture burial ground on Sunday and the President who was in attendance was seen to be deeply affected.

Guyana has one of the world’s highest suicide rates with a survey showing that in 2012 it had the highest with 44.2 suicides per 100,000 persons, or about 333 plus suicides per year. It is the leading cause of death in young people between the ages of 15-24.

Why when it's over? You'll then be saying it is the present Government's fault which is not fair to the now opposition.

I am not afraid to say that the PPP has failed in dealing with this serious epidemic. It is a national disgrace.

Have you forgotten right here on GNI we have a poster who's been working on trying to help these people at no cost whatsoever to the Guyana Government but had to place it on hold due to certain people requesting....bribe.

Hence Government does not care.

I know that you are a good man. Thanks bro.

We all care about Guyana and Guyanese. It is best when we speak out in one voice and in a non partisan way on important issues as indicated by Gil. It will benefit Guyana.

Guyana under the PPP continues to rot and it will get worse if they are re-elected.
