Guyana ranks poorly on Intl Business index

…on par with war-torn Pakistan, Tanzania

Guyana has dropped several places on the international scene, when it comes to the ease of doing business. international-business-planning
The country currently ranks in the same region as war-torn Pakistan and Tanzania, according to the 2016 World Bank’s Report.
The recently released report rated 189 countries across the world, with Singapore proving to be the most relaxed, scoring 87 points on the World Bank index.

Guyana Scored 52
The country did pick up favourable remarks for establishing its Credit Bureau in May last year.
Guyana was also flagged by the international report as being among the countries where entrepreneurs would have to resort to hiring an attorney for its business registration.
According to the World Bank, “among regions, Latin America and the Caribbean has the largest share of economies where entrepreneurs hire lawyers for company registration…It also has the highest average cost of doing so, with fees ranging from roughly US$70 in Guyana.”
This represents the sixth consecutive year that Guyana’s ranking on the international business index has plummeted.
Four of the top five ranked economies remained in the Asia Pacific region.
Brunei, Costa Rica and Kenya each moved up 21 positions, the most; Albania declined 35 positions, the worst in the 2016 report.
Since its launch in 2002, the Doing Business project has aimed to provide objective measures of the regulatory environment applicable to the life cycle of a typical small- and medium-size company. A higher ranking confers a more conductive business climate to local entrepreneurs.
The news comes on the heels of the Guyana Financial Mid-Year Report.
Kaushik Basu senior vice president and chief economist at the World Bank, in providing an overview of the report said that a quick look at the list of economies at the top with the ease of doing business reveals that the best 30 performers are not those with little regulation but those with good rules that allow efficient and transparent functioning of businesses and markets while protecting the public interest.
Guyana has over the years also been ranked poorly on the annual Transparency International Corruption perception Index. Basu in the 2016 World Bank report noted too that the data in this year’s report also show that economies that have efficient regulatory processes as measured by Doing Business have high regulatory quality.
In addition, the economies that rank high on Doing Business indicators tend to perform well in other international data sets, such as the Global Competitiveness Index and Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index.

Looks like the coalition were unable to stop the slide as they squeeze the business community to raise revenues to support those 50% raises that Granger et all fill their pockets with.

And 5 of the 6 years it was led by the PPP.

Druggie how come you didn't complain then?

Your party came to power with promises of change, but what we see is worse than exchange. In fact they going in reverse, hoping for oil to save the country.

How exactly?   Guyana remains dependent on raw commodity exports, thanks to the PPP.  Guyana lacks control over those prices, so as they drop so does Guyana.

So blame the PPP for not insisting that the Chinese do more value added processing instead of exporting tree trunks, with the leaves still on.

What does the PPP have to do with manufacturing? This you claimed was the domain of private enterprise when we raised similar questions about the PNC.  They can only facilitate via tax breaks and policy. They were on the right path with the Amelia falls but the PNC blocked this and now there is no replacement plan in place for affordable energy which is one of the drivers of manufacturing.

Jamaica has a more developed manufacturing sector, yet its access to energy is no more than what Guyana has.  Dream up another reason to excuse the PPP for doing nothing in 23 years, while demanding that the PNC works magic in 15  months.

You can bellow as much as you wish about Amalia.  Answer this.

If the PPP squandered US$5 million on Fip Motilall, a fraud with no track record on road build why should they be trusted to spend US1 billion on the entire project?

And what of those who have shown that Amalia Falls was going to cost 2X as much as similar projects elsewhere.

Now I know that the PPP planned to stuff $500 million (US) in their pockets, and are very angry that this didn't happen.  They all wanted to get rich like Fip Motilall.

You really ought to stop pretending as if the PPP were angels because evidence shows that being devils is closer to it.  So devilish that they allowed a criminal, who is now being gang raped in US jails, to kill a PPP minister.

Again you keep returning to the PPP and fictitious what if scenarios, none of which is proven. You once again evade the question of what the PPP has to do with manufacturing. This is the domain of private enterprise. When Granger came to Brooklyn to solicit your help you backed down, refusing to put your money where your mouth is.  The fact remains that the afc/pnc blocked the Amelia falls project and drove away the investor. Now they don't have a solution for going forward, not even a proposed one to bring affordable energy to the country.

Bullpoop. The PPP's plan was never to bring affordable energy, it was a ploy to scam some dollars out of the system, nothing would have come of that Amelia falls project.

Cain brother: I am really disappointed at you. You can still express your dissatisfaction without using the implied "F" words. I don't think I have seen Guyanese Portuguese displaying this type of behavior. Believe me, we do have Portuguese in Skeldon.

1.  Jagdeo harbored a criminal who the USA wanted extradited.  The Guyana gov't said that they weren't interested in doing so.  Numerous comments have been made about the degree of influence that RK had over the PPP.  The best that you all think that he is a hero.

2.  The Fip Motilall scandal was well documented.  He was awarded a contract to build a road and was given $5million.  Unless you offer evidence that he repaid the gov't when he couldn't perform my position stands.

3.  The PPP is angry that their scam to steal even more than Fip did came to nothing.  APNU saved Guyana from a major albatross, given that the PPP exhibited poor project management and that the project was being constructed at way higher prices than similar projects elsewhere.

BTW we all saw pictures of the dry river bed where Amalia was supposed to be.  No evidence that this was even an appropriate site.
