GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Police in Guyana are searching for several Amerindians they say shot arrows at a policeman who was trying to arrest a gold miner suspected of drug trafficking.

National police spokesman John Sauers said Saturday that a team has been sent into the Amazon mining district of Monkey Mountain to investigate. He said Constable Kevin George was hit several times late Wednesday and is recovering at the hospital. Sauers said villagers also attacked George and helped the suspect escape.

No one has been arrested.

Amerindians make up about 9 percent of Guyana's 742,000 inhabitants. The majority live in the South American country's interior.
