Serious crime figures

October 17, 2014 | By | Filed Under Editorial

The recent claim by the police about the state of serious crimes requires some clarification.  When people hear that serious crimes are down, obviously they would want to know exactly what it is that the relevant statistics represent.
This is no more so than when it is the view of many that the offences identified in the releases seem focused on the violent crimes of murder, robbery under arms, and robbery with aggravation.  There is a curious lack of detail regarding “total serious crimes” and therefore the citizens are none the wiser about what constitutes that amalgam.
The fundamental observation being made here is that officialdom needs to recognize that there comes a time in most people’s experiences when waffling and obfuscation must be replaced with cogent and unarguable facts which relate to the safety and security expectations of law-abiding citizens.
Moreover, the police should not be measured on the number of murders committed or not committed; outside of interventions by partners in the social services sector, there is no way that the Guyana Police Force could prevent homicides whether domestic, disorderly or felony.  One incontrovertible indicator should relate to professional investigations which result in successful prosecutions leading, ideally, to convictions.
Notwithstanding the fact that those crimes mentioned above must be tackled with coherent and comprehensive strategies, if we are to be provided with an appreciable level of comfort, there should be no denying that there are crimes just as heinous which are not mentioned with the same enthusiasm in terms of the police successes or lack thereof.
It is no secret that certain crimes feed the commission of others, and are themselves fed by others.  Matters are not helped by politicising the pursuit of certain types of crimes.  Among the offences which are not publicized as falling within the ambit of serious crimes are: drug trafficking; human trafficking; arms trafficking; prostitution and child sex
Tax evasion and revenue offences are investigated and prosecuted selectively, regardless of how material, contrived or tenuous the purported evidence.  Money laundering; corruption and bribery; intellectual property offences; and environmental crimes are seemingly ignored in terms of their potential to cause serious harm to the nation’s image, since this reflects an alarming level of insouciance and possibly official complicity.
The distribution and sale of illegal drugs impact society in myriad negative ways, but these cases, when they are made, do not feature in the serious crimes data as released by the police.  It is very obvious that political considerations are paramount when it comes to determining what will be made public and what should not.  The lethargy which characterizes how certain crimes are dealt with makes that conclusion inescapable using deductive reasoning.
A significant omission in the publication of serious crime statistics is the rate of crime, which basically, is the number of reported crimes by the population, and multiply the quotient by 100,000.  So the population is left none the wiser about crime levels and the rate of their commission, what the police are actually doing to minimize if not eliminate certain types of crime, and how the public can help to avoid becoming victims.
Furthermore, as mentioned above, politics play a significant role in what is reported, since some governments are loath to release any information which they feel makes them look inept, or that which confirms their incompetence.
Citizens have a right to be told these things, apart from being regaled with high figures in the sum of hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on the force.  It would be interesting to go beyond that worn-out practice and focus instead on the indirect costs of crime, with which the populace is more likely to empathise.  From the lack of evidence, it appears as if to date, the force has not conducted the type of surveys whose findings can assist in the formulation of realistic strategies aimed at addressing citizens’ safety and security concerns and fears.
Mouthing reform and strategies because the words sound good will not cut it.  The Guyanese people naturally expect that their contact with members of the force will not leave a bitter aftertaste.  And therefore a force characterised by professional ethics-driven men and women would be a sure indication that reform is indeed underway.

Head found in plastic bag…relatives ID remains as MFK Trading boss

October 16, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

Speculation turned into reality yesterday when relatives positively identified the human remains found at

Missing: Mohamed F Khan

Missing:
Mohamed F Khan

Cummings Lodge on the East Coast of Demerara a few weeks ago as that of missing businessman Mohamed F. Khan.
The relatives confirmed their worst fears when a nephew of the businessman was able to identify a belt and a pair of trousers that were found on the skeletal remains.
However, investigators are insisting that they will still need to do DNA tests to ascertain definitively if the corpse is that of Khan.
“His former wife and his nephew went to the parlour where the remains are being kept and identified it,” a police source confirmed last night.
The remains of a man of East Indian descent was discovered on a dam at Cummings Lodge on September 23rd last, a month after Khan disappeared.
The skull, which was wrapped in a plastic bag, was located several feet from the body.
The police source said that with the new development, investigators will be going ahead and arranging for a post mortem examination, even though the remains are badly decomposed.
They are certain that they are dealing with a clear case of murder.
“The post mortem will be done on Friday and they will be taking samples from the remains to carry out DNA testing,” the source said.
Even though Khan, who had fled to neighbouring Venezuela after selling his popular business on Hadfield Street, had spoken of threats to his life, the police have not yet detained anyone for questioning.
He had escaped execution in July at La Grange on the West Bank of Demerara when a gunman pumped a bullet in his abdomen shortly after he returned to Guyana on a brief holiday.
Khan, 54, was last heard from on August 21.
A missing person’s report was first made to the Guyana Embassy in Venezuela by Khan’s Venezuelan wife who last saw him on that date when he left the Spanish-speaking country for Guyana to contact his attorneys who were handling some business arrangements for him.
During an interview with this newspaper following the July execution attempt on his life, Khan had implicated a former business associate who had threatened him over a soured property deal. Khan had also disclosed that he believed the gunman was either a serving or former member of the Guyana Police Force, giving rise to his suspicions that his business associate is using his well-placed “connections” to escape justice.
During the interview Khan had related that his bout of troubles stemmed from the sale of one of the many properties he owned in the city. He said the buyer was trying to rob him of several million dollars owed to him from the sale of a prominent city business.
“I keep asking him for my money and at first he was always making excuses and then he started threatening me. He threatened me that if I come back to Guyana he will take me out,” he had stated.
Khan, who was a staunch advocate of the Buy Local campaign, said that he learnt from his underworld connections that there was an $11M bounty on his head.
Khan, a former television talk show host on the popular CNS Channel 6, had been out of Guyana for the past six years, claiming that he fled the land of his birth because of death threats he had been receiving. He is no stranger to controversy, having had major differences with a former top government official, which he claimed forced him to sell his business and flee Guyana.

Police are hunting for the killers of a 48-year-old taxi driver, whose body was found at around 23:30 hrs on Friday on

Dead: Abdool Hassan

Sheriff Street, Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo.
Abdool Hassan, a father of eight of Lot 2509, Tuschen Housing Scheme, was found lying in the street with several stab wounds to his neck. He was still clutching his car keys, and his vehicle, bearing registration number PGG 2410, was found in a nearby street.
Kaieteur News understands that Hassan had driven from the Tuschen Public Road at around 23:00 hrs on Friday, with a car load of passengers, to transport them into the community.
Investigators believe that someone lured him to the deserted Sheriff Street, where he was then robbed and slain. Hassan’s cellular phone and the money he would have made that night were missing.
“From the position his body was found in, we believe that he managed to get out of the car with his keys to seek help, but collapsed a short distance away,” a source told Kaieteur News.
The dead man’s daughter, Bibi Hassan, said that she was in bed when a man called out for her and said that something had happened to her father.
She immediately travelled to the location where the shocking discovery was made.
“When I reach I see him lying on the road with his car keys in his hand and his eyes were open… I called for him but I got no response,” a tearful Bibi Hassan related. She also observed what appeared to be several puncture wounds in his neck.
It was later reported that the father of eight was stabbed some 14 times. “They juk he up… the police said that they use a fine object to bore he.”
A devastated Ms. Hassan said that her father was a very peaceful person who never had problems with anyone.
She added that the 48-year-old man had been operating his taxi for a number of years

AFC calls for comprehensive strategy to address Suicide

October 19, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

As she pointed out the fact that Guyana has the highest global rate of suicide which is four times the global average,

AFC Member of Parliament, Cathy Hughes

AFC Member of Parliament, Cathy Hughes

Alliance For Change (AFC), Member of Parliament, Cathy Hughes identified the need for an urgent national think-tank to address this crucial issue.
Hughes, at AFC’s most recent press conference held at Georgetown Club, Camp Street, said that there is no indication of efforts by government to reverse the worrying trend of suicide and suicidal activities in Guyana.
The Member of Parliament told media operatives that it is clear to her that the young people in Guyana are not being taught the skills needed to deal with many of life’s challenges.
To support her conclusion, she pointed to the recent incident of a 16-year-old from the West Coast of Demerara.
The teen, Alex Persaud, who was a fifth form student of the West Coast Demerara “Swami” school committed suicide a day before his parents were expected to meet with the principal over his expulsion. Persaud of 18 Stewartville, West Coast Demerara bought the gramoxone herbicide at a shop nearby his home, ingested the substance and succumbed in hospital a few days after.
The young man was expelled reportedly after he was found to have been having a questionable relationship with an 18-year-old Information Technology teacher. The female teacher was fired because of the “friendship”.
Hughes, during the AFC press conference, also pointed out that there are the numerous incidents of murder/suicide “where again, a lot of our young people, experiencing difficulties in their relationships, resort to killing their partner then taking their own lives.”
The Parliamentarian declared that Guyana’s human resource is the country’s most valuable asset and the suicide rate clearly indicates that Guyanese, mostly the young, do not have the necessary skills to face life challenges.
She said, “The global statistics show clearly that suicide in Guyana has reached epidemic level and the Alliance For Change is urging that as a matter of priority, a team of experts be pulled together to analyse the situation so that a comprehensive strategy to address the situation can be implemented.”
Hughes sought to make it clear that addressing the levels of suicidal activities in Guyana is not and shouldn’t be treated as a political issue or one confined to a particular ethnic group.
She said that the impact of suicide and suicidal activities will affect Guyana as a nation and questioned “How can we speak of growth and development when our people are ill equipped to face life challenges.”
The Member of Parliament said that more attention needs to be placed specifically on the mental health and wellbeing of our people.
She recommended that there be centres or some mechanism where adolescents are taught life skills, where persons who experience emotional trauma can go for help.
“Our teachers, sports coaches, religious leaders and others must be taught to recognise early signs suicidal tendencies. The problem of suicide cannot be left unattended,” said Hughes.  (Abena Rockcliffe)

An Electrical Engineer at Edward B. Beharry Group of Companies was early Sunday morning gunned down outside his Prashad Nagar home moments after exiting a car.

Neighbours, relatives and police sources said Abdool Salim,24, was shot several times as he ran away from his attackers who were on cycles.

The incident occurred on Delhi Street, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown about 4 AM.

While robbery appeared to be the motive, his cellular phone and wallet with a few hundred dollars were not taken away.

From all accounts, he coincidentally exited his vehicle at the same time the perpetrators were passing. As he attempted to flee and seek cover behind a nearby vehicle, several shots were discharged.

Salim recently graduated from the University of Guyana.

When reporters arrived on the scene, several relatives and family members were in a state of shock and anguish.

Investigators interviewed a number of them as well as a neighbor in front of whose business the man slumped and died.

Engineer shot dead by bicycle bandits

October 20, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

A 23-year-old Electrical Engineer was gunned down about 30 feet from his Lot 33 Delhi Street, Prashad Nagar home around 04:00 hrs yesterday by three gunmen during a suspected robbery.

Dead: Abdool Saleem Aziz

Dead: Abdool Saleem Aziz

The dead man has been identified as Abdool Saleem Aziz, a Beharry Group of Companies employee.
The 23-year-old University of Guyana graduate was shot four times about his body.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by neighbours but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
In a press release, the police said that Aziz was confronted by three men in an apparent attempt to rob him as he was about to enter his premises.
During the confrontation, Aziz was allegedly shot.
The Prashad Nagar Police Outpost is located two corners from where the young man was shot and killed.
At the scene yesterday, neighbours recalled hearing several gunshots.
Some claimed that they thought it was the sound of squibs, given the fact that Diwali is just a few days away.
One elderly man, who asked for his name to be withheld, revealed that when he heard the loud explosion, he looked out and saw a man lying on the roadway.
He said that he immediately telephoned the police and other neighbours and informed them about what he had seen.
“After the police come, then I went outside to see who it was and then I see other neighbours start coming out too,” the elderly man related.
Investigators believed that the young man may have just gotten out of a taxi and proceeded to open his gate when he was confronted by the bandits who reportedly rode up on bicycles.

A police source close to the investigation said that the fact that Aziz had been found lying a short distance away from his yard, clearly indicates that he tried to escape from the men but failed.
It is not clear if the bandits took anything from the victim.
Investigators found a number of spent shells at the scene.
Late yesterday, the dead man’s father, Abdool Aziz, who had travelled all the way from Essequibo after he was informed of his son’s death, was visually distraught when this newspaper visited him at Prashad Nagar.
At the time he had very little information about how his son lost his life.
However he explained that one of his nephews called and informed him that his son was shot and he later succumbed at the hospital.
“My son was very quiet… I never had a problem with he. He lived alone here for some time and he never had a problem with anyone,” the father said with teary eyes.
“All I know is what my nephew said to me and what the police told me, I didn’t get a chance to talk to the neighbours,” he added.
The older Aziz said that his son had graduated from the University of Guyana recently after which he began working.
Aziz related that he last saw his son alive when the young man had travelled to the Essequibo Coast three Sundays ago to celebrate Eid ul-Adha with his family and friends.
He had no idea that his son’s life would have been snuffed out before he could see him again.
No one has so far been arrested.
Aziz’s death occurs less than 72 hours after the death of a 48-year-old taxi driver, Abdool Hassan, whose lifeless body was found with multiple stab wounds in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo on Friday night.

If that is the case, how come the opposition has not yet embarked on some ethnic cleansing? It happens everywhere, so why not in Guyana?

Suspected robbery… Indian national dies hours after stabbed on seawall

October 24, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

James Peters

An Indian national died at Dr. Balwant Singh’s Hospital early yesterday, several hours after he was stabbed during an alleged robbery on the Kitty seawall, Georgetown. The incident occurred around 23:30 hrs on Wednesday in the vicinity of Celina’s Restaurant and Bar.
The dead man has been identified as 31-year-old James Peters, a nurse at Balwant Singh’s Hospital. He lived at Lot 201 Camp Street, Georgetown, with four other Indian nationals.
Peters, who worked at the hospital for the past four years, was stabbed between his left side neck and shoulder. He died while receiving emergency treatment.
According to information received, Peters and some of his friends, also Indian nationals, had gone to the seawall to look at the floats participating in the annual Diwali motorcade celebration, when he was attacked.
One of Peters’ colleagues, a female who asked not to be named, said that they had called a taxi late on Wednesday to transport them home when Peters stepped back from the group to answer his cellular phone.
The colleague said that she cannot recount what exactly transpired, but she remembers seeing Peters rushing toward them with his hands on his neck.
“He said that he was stabbed, so we put him in the car and we took him to the hospital. We didn’t see what happened or we didn’t see anyone, but Peter didn’t have his phone,” the woman said.
She said that they heard no screams or cries for help. The colleague added that the Peters had brought his phone from India.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the police said that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the death of Peters, who succumbed while receiving medical treatment yesterday.
According to the police, investigations so far, have revealed that Peters was at the Kitty Seawall when he was stabbed to his shoulder, close to the neck, under circumstances that are not yet quite clear.
Kaieteur News was told that the now dead nurse was scheduled to return to his homeland in December to tie the knot with his girlfriend, also an Indian national, who works at another private hospital in the city.
“He was getting leave in December and he and his girlfriend were supposed to travel to India to get married. Their families had already made arrangements for the wedding,” the colleague said.
She added that Peters’ family is currently in discussions as to whether or not they will transport the body to India for burial.
“I don’t know what they will do yet, because it is very costly,” the woman said.
Investigations are ongoing.

Who will clean up criminals from our streets?

October 26, 2014 | By | Filed Under Letters

Dear Editor,
A few years ago, I was robbed and stabbed on the sea wall in the evening hours. I lost everything except my cell phone. I was trying to pacify the bandits and in the process of doing this I was stabbed in the back. Fortunately, I am still alive. This was not the case with James Peter; a nurse from India was stabbed to death for a cell phone. A very generous and promising nurse met his demise in the hands of the cowards, who are out on our streets freely looking for another prey.
Hello you cowards and losers in life, don’t you have feelings? What if someone stabbed you right in the chest to rob your cell phone? How long can you be happy using that cell phone, whilst the blood of James Peter is crying out aloud? The curse of the family and friends of Peter will see your demise sooner.
I have been wondering about my security in Georgetown. As everyone, I try to come home before 7pm. This means I am not really free on our roads. Anyone can be in Peter’s place and get killed for a piece gadget. Who shall we blame, government, police force, ourselves? Who is supposed to clean up our streets and make it crime free and robber-free society? It seems like; we are heading towards an evil society, where evil is triumphing and where justice has a very slim place. Perpetrators are right in the middle of us; we won’t even know they are drinking a beer with us until they have stabbed us. I think we have take upon this responsibility to clean our society and make it crime free. The police force alone cannot do this task, since the infrastructure is very limited. Am I not free to walk in my own street at night? Why am I not free? There is serious flaw in this society. We have to start from own home, bring up children with right ingredients of life, so that when they grow up they can be responsible and good citizens on this nation.
I would like to extend my heart-felt sympathies to Vannie and all the Indian nurses working here in Guyana. We commend your service for the healthcare system of our country.

Gunmen invade St. Philip’s Anglican, rob parishioners

November 3, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

By Kiana Wilburg
As Parishioners gathered at the St. Phillips Anglican Church early yesterday morning, three armed young men shamelessly marched onto the holy grounds and robbed them of their money, cellular phones and even their wedding bands.

St. Phillips Anglican Church

St. Phillips Anglican Church

Kaieteur News understands that the robbery took place around 7:30am. The Priest of the Church, Oswald Barnes, was preparing for the Sunday Mass. In relating the incident, the priest said that he was in the Church’s vestry when he heard a loud noise.
“When I heard the noise, I asked the Deacon to go see what all the fuss was about. He rushed back saying that there is a robbery, members getting hold up. So we secured ourselves in the vestry. I tried to climb up and peep through the vents to see if I could see what was going on but I was restrained.
“The Deacon told me not to do so because they could see me and come inside. We waited in the room. The ordeal lasted for about five minutes and then they left. When I came out members of the Church started to explain what happened. It was a terrible experience. I cannot believe a robbery took place inside the church. Wow,” the Priest lamented.
Father Barnes told this publication that based on what members related to him, the three unmasked men, who could not be older than 20 years, came into the church and demanded the belongings of the members.
He stated that the Treasurer of the Church was also held at gun point and was asked to turn over the monies collected.
“But all he got from the Treasurer was a few hundred dollar bills because that’s all he had in his pocket but they missed a brown envelope on a table that had the money inside.
The treasurer was standing behind it but apparently they did not notice that,” the pastor added.
Barnes asserted that he tried his best to calm members of the church who were very traumatized by the incident. He said that, nevertheless, the proceedings of the Church continued as usual. He said that the message of the day was “the Abuse of Power by leaders” but spoke a little on the worrying escalation of crime in the country. He said that the members of the congregation also prayed for the troubled young men.
“We prayed for them. I think everything worked out because some of the members of the Church are licensed firearm holders and strange enough, they didn’t walk with their firearms today (yesterday) and maybe it is a good thing that they didn’t for who knows what would have played out. I don’t know how I would have taken it if there was a gun play in the church and someone was terribly injured,” the priest said.
Barnes expressed, however, that although a call was placed to the police after the brazen young men left, “not a single officer turned up even after Church was over and that was an hour later”.
While stating that he found this to be even more stressing and disappointing in the circumstances, he concluded, “I don’t have much confidence in the Guyana Police Force.”
Nonetheless, the matter was reported and investigations into the incident have commenced.

November 3, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

Two men have been arrested for the Saturday night attack that left the 25-year-old father of two dead.
According to police, at about 20:30hrs Saturday evening, Bourne, of James and Barr Streets, Albouystown, was standing on the roadway at Cooper Street, Albouystown, when a vehicle drove by from which shots were discharged. Lloyd Bourne was struck to his chest and was later pronounced dead on arrival at a private hospital.
Relatives further disclosed that Bourne’s ‘Child Mother’ died three weeks ago of cancer and his death leaves a gaping hole within the family, since his 11-month old son will be growing up without his biological parents.
“A boy ran upstairs and tell me he hear Lloyd get shot. We were calling his phone and a Doctor at Balwant Singh Hospital answer and said to come down quickly, he didn’t tell us nothing else, he just hang up the phone. When we reach he was already transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was carried to the morgue,” an in-law lamented.
The shooting follows that of the recent controversial killing of 28-year-old career criminal, Adrian Bishop.
Bishop who had a lengthy criminal record was arrested for assaulting a policewoman with whom he allegedly had a relationship. Police stated that a mobile police patrol had responded to a policewoman’s report that Bishop had assaulted her in Albouystown.
The ranks, accompanied by the policewoman, went to Hill Street, Albouystown, where Bishop of Garnett Street, Kitty, was pointed out to them. Bishop was subsequently shot in the neck by a police constable after he tried resisting arrest.

Taxi driver survives two bullets to head

November 17, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

A teenaged taxi driver is currently in a critical but stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after he was shot twice to the head last Saturday night, by one of two gunmen who led him to a desolate area in the Zeelugt Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), with intentions to kill him.

The injured Ramesh Persaud

It seemed that the two gunmen only wanted to kill taxi driver Ramesh Persaud, since they did not take his cash and jewelry, which exceeded $100, 000.
Persaud was extremely lucky, since the bullets did not damage any vital organs in his head.
One of the bullets is still lodged at the back of his head while the other was surgically removed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where Persaud is a patient.
Doctors say it is too risky to remove the remaining bullet at this time.
Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday, the 19-year-old Persaud, who lives at Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo, told this newspaper that he was “shot for no reason” because the gunmen did not rob him.
He said, at the time, he had in his possession, a gold chain worth $30, 000, a gold ring worth $15, 000, a gold band worth $15, 000, a Backberry Curve cellular phone worth $20, 000 and $60, 000 cash. He insisted that he never saw the gunmen before and seemed baffled as to why they would want to kill him.
Persaud also insisted that he is not involved in any “bad business” that could put his life at risk.
The teenager explained that he was hired by one of the gunmen at the Parika junction around 21: 00 hours, and was requested to drive to a nearby Chinese restaurant to pick-up another man.
After he made the pick-up, Persaud said that the gunmen requested a drop-off in the Zeelugt Housing Scheme, EBE. He noted that one gunman was in the front passenger’s seat, while the other was in the back seat of the vehicle.
Lured into the trap, the teenager said that he entered the village, unsure of  where the men were going.
“They didn’t tell me where they were going, so I just drove in the village. I drive and pass the first street and was going to pass the second corner but they stopped me there and told me to turn around the vehicle and put them off at the first street,” he related.
Persaud said he proceeded with the drop-off, although he found it “strange” that the men would disembark at the head of a street.
He stated that when he reached the drop off point, the gunman in the front seat inquired about the fare, and shortly after, the gunman in the back seat fired a shot behind his head.
“When I turn around to stop them off at the first street, the one in the front seat ask me how much is the fare. I told him $2000. A couple seconds after, I was shot behind my head by the other gunman in the back seat,” he said. Amazingly, Persaud survived the gunshot and “played dead” by slouching on the steering wheel of his vehicle, so that he would not be shot again.
The young taxi driver told this newspaper that as the men exited the vehicle, he overheard the gunman who was sitting in the front seat of the vehicle telling the other gunman to “make sure he is dead.”
Consequently, when the other gunman exited the vehicle, he approached the driver’s window, and discharged another round to Persaud’s head.
Miraculously, Persaud was able to survive the ordeal and the men fled the scene.
After the men ran away, Persaud said, he gathered enough strength to drive all the way to the “Boraserie Bridge” in Parika, where he eventually called his brother and informed him about the incident, before he collapsed.
According to his brother, Roland Persaud, “Ramesh was found at the Boraserie Bridge covered in blood” and was immediately rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, West Coast Demerara.
The teenager was subsequently transferred to the GPHC shortly after, where one of the bullets lodged in his head, was surgically removed. Persaud is now awaiting surgery to remove the other bullet that remains lodged in an area close to his ear. His mother, Amilia Persaud and father Looknaught Persaud, described their son’s survival as “a miracle from God”.
The matter was reported at the Leonora Police Station and investigations are currently ongoing.
Meanwhile, as the police were responding to the scene of the shooting their vehicle struck down David Dhanraj, 38, of Greenwich Park.
Police in a statement said that it is investigating the fatal accident that occurred at about 23:05 hours on Saturday on the main road at Greenwich Park, EBE, which resulted in the death of Dhanraj.
According to the police, a Constable was driving a Force vehicle along the roadway when it is alleged that the pedestrian attempted to cross the road and was struck down. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital. The rank is under close arrest as the investigations continue.

Berbice man found dead with bullet to head, throat slit

November 17, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the suspected execution style murder of Angoy’s Avenue resident Richard Dey, 40, a father of two.
Dey’s body was discovered in an alley leading to his home at Angoy’s Avenue with a suspected bullet wound to his head and a laceration to his throat at about 22:30 hours on Saturday.
It is understood that Dey is a mechanic and would mostly ply his trade in the interior, including the Berbice River.
According to information, Dey owns a shiny Green Car, PRR 5958.
On Saturday evening Dey, his reputed wife Ongel Lindie, a teacher, and their two kids went out earlier and returned home around 20:30 hrs. Dey subsequently left home around 22:00hrs to go out and was walking toward his car, a walk which would take about a ½ minute, when a gunshot rang out.
According to a relative, when she heard the explosion, she did not pay much mind.
Nevertheless she peered outside and saw that Dey’s car was still parked where he had left it.
She assumed that Dey was in the vehicle talking to someone on his cellular phone since her calls to his phone went unanswered.
The woman still did not think too much of it, but continued to survey the area where the car was parked.
But as the woman was preparing to go out and investigate, a teenager who frequently uses the alley saw the body and alerted the police.
By this time, the woman had made her way toward the car and stumbled upon the bleeding body of Dey slumped by a drain.
When the police arrived, they examined the body and found it had what they suspected to be a bullet wound to the head, while there was a gaping wound.
Family members were reluctant to divulged information, but the man’s demise is being treated as a hit. It was revealed that he was involved in some shady deals and the drug trade.
It was reported that he owed persons large sums of money, especially in the Berbice River areas and was being marked. He would usually hang around persons of shady character.
Robbery has been ruled out since the man’s pockets were reportedly not ruffled and the $15,000 he had left home with was recovered.
Several pieces of jewelry which he was wearing at the time were also not touched. However his cell phone was not found.
His body is at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.

Hicken warns against women dressing provocatively; 50 rape cases reported for 2014

Commander of 'A' Division, Clifton Hicken.

Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken.

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Some 50 females have been brutally raped already for 2014, according to ‘A’ Division Commander, Clifton Hicken, who has cautioned women not to dress in a manner that encourages this illegal act that has claimed the lives of a few victims.

Hicken told reporters this morning, Monday, November 17 that there has been a spiraling increase in rape for this year when compared to last year [2013] where 38 cases were recorded.

Last month alone, 11 persons were raped; representing a 31% increase when compared to the statistics for 2013.

The ‘A’ Division Commander says the issue is now on the “front burner” of issues to be addressed in his division.

He said the police are currently working with the Ministry of Education and Human Services along with other Non – Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to ensure that these cases are not only solved but prevented from happening.

On the note of prevention, the Commander urged women and girls to always dress in a manner that is “morally acceptable.”

“While we try to prevent somebody from committing the offence we must ensure that we do not create an atmosphere for it to happen,” he said; adding that “and that is why we advocate for young females within a certain age group who are vulnerable, between 13 – 18, to always embrace an attire that is accepted morally.”

He said women and girls must ensure they do not dress in any manner that “plays into the agenda” of a rapist.

However, the issue of the way women dress is not a new one and there have been many arguments against it by several experts who share the view that men do not have the right to rape someone just by the way they are dressed.

Only last month, Opposition Leader David Granger expressed alarm at the rising rate of violent crimes in Guyana; observing that data in relation to rape and other deaths are not usually made available.

He criticized the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in this regard. The GPF has been consistent in disseminating monthly reports on serious and other crimes and traffic offenses in the country but have failed to reveal statistics in relation to suicide and rape.

The Opposition Leader believes journalists must also apply pressure on the Force to ensure that such information is fed to the populace

NONSENSE!  Crime in Guyana has moved way beyond a random act.  It has reached the point where bandits are even invading churches DURING the service to rob those worshipping there.

Rohee like the rest of the PPP top brass are a bunch of visionless clowns. The man has no clue about what he should do to quell the out of control crime situation. When offered professional help, the PPP refuses because they are scared that their corruption will be exposed. Meanwhile, the streets are awash with blood.

Mars

This is what the opposition has to communicate to the people the PPP are basically saying that people are satisfied and happy with the level of violent crimes in Guyana.

The PPP is basically saying that Guyanese like when their families are killed on the roads, by the gun and other heinous methods.

This message has to be exposed.

Thieves are everywhere

November 21, 2014 | By | Filed Under Letters

Dear Editor, The sudden rise of crime in our country is now a concern for all Guyanese citizens and the re-introduction of blackouts makes it easier for thieves and criminals to escape very easily from the police and citizens. A few days ago bandits invaded NAREI not too far from where I live, one staff barely escaped death. A popular supermarket in Agriculture Road was robbed over ten times in a very short period of time; no one was apprehended by the police. Even when these bandits and criminals are arrested by the police, they are represented by some high ranking lawyers and very soon they are released to go out and rob and kill innocent citizens again. It seems to me our legal system is a very corrupt system because our judges and magistrates don’t seem to be able to distinguish right from wrong. The death penalty should also be enforced to these hard core criminals who rob and kill innocent citizens. When I look at the news and read the papers I see lots of innocent citizens are suffering at the hands of criminals and nothing has been done. Those who make the law break the law, thus we have become a nation of lawless people like Jesus said: ‘’The blind leading the blind.’’ Just recently, bandits went into a church and robbed the congregation during a service and none were caught. What have we become as a nation for people to stoop so low to rob churches and their members during worship? We have fallen morally, spiritually and intellectually. It’s about time our President gets serious about this crime situation in Guyana and implement more stringent laws. If we compare ourselves with our Caricom neighbours we can clearly see we are left behind as a nation. I call on all stake-holders, NGOS, churches and law abiding citizens to speak out against the rise of crime in our country; our nation Guyana is too young to die. Rev.Gideon Cecil

Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He was shot twice to his forearm and robbed of $13M on Monday, while reportedly waiting in his vehicle that was parked at the front of Sleep-In Hotel, Brickdam. The hotel is a mere two doors east of Brickdam Police Station. According to 46-year-old Fazil Ali, the incident occurred around 8:30 hours, while he was waiting for a fellow employee to join him. They were to purchase “machine parts, food supplies and other goods to carry in the bush.” “When I reached the hotel, I made a phone call to my workmate and told him to come downstairs, so we could go and buy the boss goods early. About one minute after that, I get shoot and rob by a bandit dressed in all over black with a rag over his face,” he related. Ali, of 104 Agricultural Road, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, said that the lone gunman approached the passenger’s side of his vehicle and discharged three rounds at him, before making off with a bag containing $13 M that was just below the passenger’s seat. Ali said that he immediately exited his vehicle after the shooting and saw the gunman “running over the road to a blue Toyota 212”, in which he escaped. Ali said that there were two others in the car. The procurement officer, who works for prominent gold miner Chunilall Baboolall, said that his situation could have been worse, if the magazine for the gunman’s weapon did not fall out during the shooting. “The police recover some spent shells and a magazine from the scene. I thank God that the magazine fall out the man gun when he was shooting me. With the way he was squeezing the trigger, I feel he would’ve emptied it on me,” Ali expressed. When asked about a possible “set-up”, Ali said that neither he nor his workmate would have conspired to so do. He said that the gunmen could have been watching his movements over the last two years, as he usually meets with his workmate at the Sleep In Hotel whenever they needed to procure goods for his employer. Ali sustained two gunshots to his left arm and a “bullet graze” on his stomach. The matter was reported at the Brickdam Police Station and investigations are currently ongoing.
