Guyana will begin their quest to win their first regional U17 50-over tournament when they take on the Windward Islands today at Gilbert Park, Trinidad and Tobago.

The Guyanese took the runner up spot in last year’s competition which was won by Trinidad and Tobago who got the edge with 0.3 fast bowling bonus points. However, their game against the eventual champions was rained out without a ball being bowled.

Windward Islands have been one of the most consistent teams in regional youth cricket of recent and the Guyana team, which boasts five players with previous experience at this level, will be wary of the threat their opponents can pose.

The side was once again afforded the opportunity to play in the Guyana Cricket Board inter county U19 tournament and the exposure has certainly helped in their preparation.

The Guyanese, led by left arm spinner Ashmead Nedd had another practice session yesterday at the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board National Cricket Centre in Couva.

The team seemed a balanced one and with the likes of Nedd, Kevlon Anderson, Sachin Singh, Alex Algoo, Kevin Christian and Orlando Jailall, they can certainly go all the way. Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday following their practice session, Nedd said that his boys are confident and eager to showcase their talent.

He pointed out that they will have to utilise the fast bowlers a lot more since bonus points are important. Nedd said that the players are gelling nicely and playing as a team will be important. β€œWe will take one game at a time, we know that the Windwards have some good players, but they tend to give some early chances and once we capitalise we should overcome them.”

Nedd, who plays for Demerara Cricket Club, stated that he is looking to become the first captain to win the title for Guyana and will not take any team for granted, stating that he is pleased with his personal form at the moment.

Coach Orin Bailey said there are a number of talented players in the team and expressed confidence of them going all the way. β€œOnce we can get the basics right and support each other we will definitely be hard to beat,” he added. Bailey, a former Guyana first class batsman, said the team spirit is good and made mention of opener Alex Algoo, whom he said can take the game away from any opposition even though this is his first year at this level.

Among the players he also singled out are Sachin Singh, Kevlon Anderson who made a century against Essequibo in the inter county U19, Kevin Omroa and Sinclair.
