GTA’s annual Olympic Day Taekwondo Championship

The Guyana Taekwondo Association (GTA) recently held the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) sponsored Olympic Day Taekwondo Championship in observance of Olympic Day 2017.
The competition saw athletes participating in various divisions of the Poomsae (forms), Aerial Kicks and Gyrugi (fighting) categories.
In the children’s Aerial Kicks category, Khadeeja Taljit, Tejindra Ramcharran, Arvinda Comacho, Ezekiel Kellmon and Anthony Thom kicked off the action.
However, it was Tejindra Ramcharran who showcased an array of brilliant kicks landing him the first place spot with Khadeeja Taljit the lone female in Group A in second place. Arvinda was third, while Ezekiel Kellmon and Anthony Thom shared the 4th place spot.
In Group B, Rodwin Court ended in first place followed by Ricardo Ramlall and Anthony Court in that order.
In Group C it was 5-year-old Vivek Bassoo who took first place followed by Emma Mandall second.
First in Group D was Shibraj Jacob with Arshad Ali coming in second.
In the Gyrugi children’s category, the action heated up with KhadeejaTaljit battling it out against her two male opponents and when the action settled, it was Ezekiel Kellmon who emerged victorious, followed by Tejindra Ramcharran in second place and KhadeejaTaljit, place.
Khadeeja Taljit was congratulated by all the coaches for her bravery and the good fight she put up.
In Group B, Anthony Thom emerged victorious followed by Arvinda Comacho and Ricardo Ramlall Group C action saw the tiny tots battling it out with the top spot going to Emma Mandall after putting up a good fight against her male counterparts.
Second was Shibraj Jacob and Vivek Bassoo, third. The top three athletes in Group D were Rodwin Famey, Anthony Court and Arsdad Ali.
In the Poomsae category which attracted the big boys and girls, Sasha Singh led the way in the Mixed Division, followed by Akbar Singh with Sarah Singh in third place and Olivia Facey, fourth.
This was followed by the Intermediate Males competition which saw first place going to Dishon John ahead of Ronaldo Fernandez. In the Female Gyrugi category, it was young Sasha Singh who earned the winning spot by the slimmest of margins, a single point, over Olivia Facey with Sasha Singh settling for third.
In the Mixed category, it was Akil St. Hill who took first place while Shenique Bourne took second in both the Poomsae and Gyrugi categories. In the Junior Boys category, Randy Ali led the charts both in the Poomsae and Gyrugi categories which saw his brother settling for second place.
The Beginners Males division saw Randy Deochan claiming the first place prize while Akbar Singh took second. David Brown emerged as the best Intermediate Male winning ahead of Dishon John and Ronaldo Fernandez, respectively.
The finale saw two senior males battling it out with both displaying a series of advance kicks with Wayne Forde kicking his way to the top spot, Brian Woolford was second.
According to the GTA, this competition was successfully coordinated by Coach, Ms. La Toya Herbert who had fun working with all the participants, judges and coaches. Herbert expressed thanks to all the instructors who offered their support.
Gratitude was also extended to the Guyana Olympic Association, Coach-Master Ramjeet Ramphal, Coach-Master Roy Bacchus, Coaches, Alim Azimullah, Trevor Bassoo and Kawall Ramkiran as well as the others would have contributed towards the success of eh event.
Meanwhile, the public is being reminded that the Guyana Taekwondo Association training facility is located in Woolford Avenue, above the Guyana Teacher’s Union Hall.
