The Guyana Taekwondo Association (GTA) on Friday last hosted its first ‘Back to School’ Taekwondo Gyrugi (fighting) Competition’ in what it hopes to be an annual event.
This competition was focused on the junior class with the aim of: marking the end of the long school holiday period and to usher in the new school term and the general promotion and development of young athletes.
The event kicked off with Omario Darlington and Akeem Fowler kicking it out in Group A.
While they were both shaky at first the action soon picked up with Fowler scoring the first point.
He continued to get the better of Darlington thus landing him the first place position ahead of Darlington.
The action in Group B continued with Anthony Court and Arshad Ali. It was Court who nonetheless clinched the first place with a two point margin difference over Ali.
It was however in Group C where the action really got going in the battle of the tiny tots. Facing off were off springs of taekwondo students – Nathan Vanderhyden and Vivek Bassoo, Emma Mandall the lone female and Shibraj Jacob.
The action started with Vanderhyden against Jacob, the former displayed a great deal of superiority over the latter and clinched the fight comfortably by a nine point margin.
Taking center stage next were Mandall and Bassoo where they both tried to outscore each other with their tiny legs, but it was Bassoo who prevailed in the end.
Mandall shrugged off the loss to Bassoo to return and get the better of Jacob in the fight for third and fourth place.
In the first place fight, Vanderhyden stole the show to defeat Bassoo by nine clear points.
The champion displayed a high degree of superiority and surely impressed all the judges, coaches and spectators.
