[www.inewsguyana.com] – The accusations leveled against the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) by A Partnership of National Unity (APNU) of using state resources for political campaigning, race baiting and vote buying are not sitting well with PPP’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee.

He described the accusations as “cynical concoctions”, which he says have no credibility and respect for Guyanese and called on Leader of the APNU, David Granger to cease using the State resources he is entitled to.

“If Mr. Granger is so concerned about misuse of state resources, he should abandon and return all the resources he’s currently using as well as the benefits he receives from the State as Leader of the Opposition,” Rohee told a news conference at Freedom House yesterday, December 08.

When asked to respond directly to the accusations leveled against the Party, Rohee claimed he has no idea what the Opposition Leader spoke about.

“I have no idea what Mr Granger is speaking about. I believe this is just an attempt to raise a red herring because there’s nothing much for them to hang on to,” the General Secretary said.

On Friday last, Granger accused the PPP, including President Donald Ramotar of several breaches to the electoral practice among which is the use of state resources for its election campaign activities.

The Opposition Leader says a complaint has already been made to the Guyana Elections Commission but registered his fear that these complaints may not be investigated by the police accordingly under the stewardship of Rohee who has oversight for the police force.

Granger accused the government too of fear mongering, race baiting and vote buying.

On this note, President Ramotar at a recent press conference said “its absolute nonsense… that’s totally not true, they are fishing.”

The President reasoned “I think they realize that they are losing ground and they are trying to find a way.The ruling Party has never denied that it has started its elections campaign in wake of early general and regional elections.

Granger et al has no "government business" so should use their personal resources to go about their campaigning. Since the parliament is not disbanded, they are still due the privilidges of their office. The president acknowledge this when he suggested his suspension was to facilitate dialogue. You do not speak to people who hold not portfolio.

He is actuall y as crafty and craven as a fox. He knows exactly what is going on and is following the usual PPP line, plead ignorance or point th e finger at others.

Appropriate remuneration must be made to the elected political officers during the period until after the next election.

Prorogation of parliament, applied properly, is for the elected representatives to address relevant issues.

Non-resolution of the issues will lead to an election in about six months' time.

The political opposition has been saying all along that the $10,000 "Because We Care" grant distribution was part of the PPP's electioneering, as is the 5 to 8 percent unilateral public servants salary hike with one-year back pay.

The opposition also argued that the PPP regime's allocation of $500 million for Georgetown cleanup was part of the PPP's elections plan too.

Opposition Leader, David Granger is assured of a range of benefits along with his salary and a pension, following the passage in 2010 of the Leader of the Opposition (Benefits and Other Facilities) Bill 2009
According to the legislation, the holder of the office shall be entitled at government expense to rent-free furnished office accommodation; medical attention, including medical treatment or reimbursement of medical expenses incurred by him for himself and the dependent members of his family; full-time security service at his official place of residence and at his office to be provided by the Guyana Police Force; the services of a research assistant, an executive assistant/secretary, a clerical/office assistant, a chauffeur, a personal security officer, a gardener and two domestic servants; and salary, vacation allowance and parliamentary benefits equivalent to those of a Cabinet minister.

This whole idea that only members of the government should be entitled to state's fund and protection in their pursuit of upholding democracy strikes me rather odd. Is the PPP trying to outlaw all opposition parties and establish a declared dictatorship, or a communist one party state?  This is about the 10th time that the PPP has suggested that opposition parliamentarians should be stripped of a state salary and privileges due to them by international democracy convention no less. Only countries such as China and North Korea do not have a state recognised opposition.
