DEMERARA WAVES, OCTOBER 31 --- Guyana’s Opposition Leader, David Granger on Friday announced that he has called off talks with President Donald Ramotar on Local Government Elections.

Those polls have not been held since 1994 because of delays in local government legislative reforms and more recently government’s reluctance to do so because it lost its parliamentary majority in the 2011 general election.

Granger’s A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) had given government a September 15 ultimatum to name a date for the polls.

The President earlier this week basically ruled out the holding of the polls soon because APNU wants the local polls and  the Alliance For Change (AFC) has tabled a no confidence motion.

The Opposition Leader says that continuing talks with the President on Local Government Elections will be pointless. Mr. Granger disagrees that he was duped by the President into participating in the talks.

Most Local government councils have fallen into administrative disrepair due to death, migration and resignation of many office-holders. Poor drainage systems, bad roads,  poor public market conditions and inefficient waste collection are among major problems facing towns and villages.

In India there is shyte everywhere. That kulie government still has the mentality of backwardness. There was a time in Guyana when ppl had the notion of a Blackman could kill u just like that. But today, my goodness them kulies moh bad. They are in high places and above the law. Just like in India.

Those talks were pointless indeed. Granger came to his senses late, but better late than never. I had said that whatever the outcome, the AFC will stand tall. The AFC is standing tall and its no-confidence motion is now definite, whenever the PPP decides to stop hiding from parliament.

All those GNI members who were saying that Granger stabbed the AFC in its back now have to sober up.

The oppostion is not ready for elections. Perhaps, after the no-confidence vote, then they will buck up.

Granger is clearly not yet fully convinced the PPP are a conniving lot. He believes he can negotiate with them while every which way Ramotar is saying he will not authorize Local government elections. He knows that would heighten awareness of their administration corrupt practices in  local campaigns nation wide and it  will boost their negatives in the General. He does not want to increase their chances of losing.

Granger need to treat this as he would a war and take his advantages over the long run. Go for the general, force them back into a minority government then call for local elections. They cannot back down.

When they call local elections,  immediately force a no confidence vote and have their behinds  doing exactly what you wanted them to do in the first place. It may take a year longer but so what?
