Student allegedly gang-raped on UG campus

AN unidentified female student of the University of Guyana was on Friday allegedly drugged and gang-raped by a group of male students.
According to reports, after the perpetrators had finished with their victim, they escorted her to the campus medic where she was treated for injuries she sustained from the assault.
A university staffer told the Guyana Chronicle that he overheard the young men who committed the act joking and describing what they did in graphic details.
The staffer related that he attempted to see the medic who treated the victim, but was told that he was not available.
The UG employee also said that he was “trying to get into contact with the medic to see why no police were involved in it,” stressing that if by today the medic does not report the incident, he would take matters into his own hands and report the incident to the police.
The staffer, who lives on the campus in the building behind where the rape occurred, said more than once he had recommended routine and even unplanned checks on areas on campus, especially those that are secluded, since it is not safe for students.
But he said his advice has fallen on deaf ears.
The staffer also related that knowing the dangers of the campus, he tried to put up signs and speak to the workers currently doing construction on the campus to promptly leave after their jobs are finished, “but even this has not been done,” he said.
When this publication arrived on the scene, the UG staffer could be heard arguing with the security guards stationed on campus saying, “I have told you people, time and time again to do routine checks…now look what has happened. A girl has been raped and you don’t even know whether she will report it because of shame or not!”
He fears that without prosecution, the perpetrators would feel emboldened and possibly try the same on another girl.
While he does not know the names of the boys, he claims that he knows their faces and come today, he will put them in the hands of the relevant authorities as “they should not be protected.”
“Even though she [victim] shouldn’t have been there,” he said, “It shouldn’t have happened and she needs satisfaction. These students are behaving like animals… this is a human life and they have ruined it, mentally, physically and spiritually.”
This publication made several attempts to contact the family of the victim but was unsuccessful.
