For purpose of clarification least we have the young ones viewing here be misled; evolution has no purpose. It is not a perfecting mechanism. It just happens.

As such there is no such thing as forward or backward trajectory. The means whereby natural selection functions tells us why. Natural selection is the name for an accidental meeting of a mutation and an environmental circumstances that results in differential survival rates that changes the characteristics of the specie.

For example, black bugs on white rocks get found easily and are eaten by birds. Bugs with a mutation that have them with some white spots live longer because the birds do not think of them as the bugs they want. The ones with more white spots survive longer so reproduce more. Soon the bugs with bigger white sports predominate and black bugs are extinct. In time all bugs become white. 

In short, Black organism+accidental mutation ( white spots) +environmental happenstance ( white rocks)+ birds searching for bugs= evolution of black bugs  to white bugs that survives. If the ocean washes up some blue rocks with red spots who knows what can happen here.

By 2045 a lot of us will be having 'designer grand and great grandchildren'...
