The Guyana Football Federation’s 1st Division Club League will kick off its third season today at the Leonora Track and Field Facility with a double header. Guyana Defence Force, the reigning league champions, will contest today’s feature game at 20:00hrs against one of the six clubs that has been added to the league, Western Tigers.
Head coach of Tigers, Calvin “Flu” Allen believes his team has what it takes to win the league in their opening season but explained that, “Debuting is never the easiest thing but our expectations are high and I think we got the right mix of players.” Allen noted the quality of teams in the league that will make good claims for the title as well, “The likes of GDF, Fruta (Conquerors) and Milerock will provide stiff competition but once we get our tactics right we are sure to come out on top.”
The 2015-16 Stag Premier league Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) winners have recruited some big names in local football to help their title bid, including former Slingerz FC forward Devon Millington, Andrew Murray Jr. (Alpha United), Colin Nelson (Alpha United) and former Western Tigers youth player Hubert Pedro who had stints at Fruta Conquerors and Alpha United.
The Phillip Rowley captained Western Tigers unit will be one of the favourites of the tournament with good tournament records in the past two years.
