For over two decades, three Gecom Chairman were Indo Guyanese, namely

(1) Doodnauth Singh

(2) Goocol Boodhoo

(3) Dr.Steve Surujbally.

Afro Guyanese names were submitted but none were selected, there seems to be a political biasness, the PPP are only satisfied when the head of GECOM,is an Indo Guyanese.

On one of the list submitted,Justice James Patterson name listed and Cheddi Jagan choose Doodnauth Singh,it's mind boggling at that time who were more Qualified and "fit and proper"

The Commission is made up of seven members,The Chairman,Three (3) members appointed by the President, acting in his own deliberate judgement and Three (3) members appointed by the President acting on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition after he has meaningfully consulted the non-governmental opposition parties represented in the National Assembly.

It appears the Chairman is a key figure and Afro Guyanese aren't Qualified and "Fit and Proper" they can't be trusted, that's the mind set of most Indo Guyanese....Ironic.

Django, there are times when you can be a real knucklehead. This comment, I assume is yours, is one of those times when you are a Real knucklehead.

Read your post above this one, its contradicts everything you are saying here, Ramkarran like others, nailed the problem on its head.

It is not about the fact that previous GECOM chairmen were Indos, it is the manner in which they are selected. And the the PPP has always been a victim of the PNC and its selection of the GECOM chair.

The bigger picture is the PNC, which cannot be trusted to have free and fair election, is laying the foundation for rigging the next election, and a total control of society.

Guys like you are short-sighted, you are not seeing the larger picture, let alone that the current uproar is about Granger’s move to create a dictatorship, and to really entrench the PNC in power for a long time to come.

I submit to you that the only reason the PNC can do all of this is they have no respect for the PPP, Jagdeo (despite all his weaknesses) and Indos. I would add that they will have respect only if and when the Indos take to the streets in protest and show their anger like Africans...are you willing to do this?

Your statement above is not only anti-Indo, but you seek to justify the nonsense Granger is doing.

I am not Anti-Indo,you got it wrong,i say it like it is.

All you people who are running from the inconvenient facts that Django is pointing to need a dose of 'honestea'

It has been pointed out elsewhere that the PPP has bent over backwards to appoint ONLY Indo-Guyanese to the key gatekeeper post of GECOM chairman

It's a comfort level thing, and we need to admit it, and think of ways to overcome it

Black people in Guyana are not stupid, so stop insulting their intelligence

Bhai, sometimes you have to excuse some folks.

Django

Here is some truth:

Burnham (Afro Guyanese President) Every single election rigged.

Hoyte (Afro Guyanese President) Electies rigged, In fact Hoyte was a bigger rigger than Burnham.

Granger (Afro Guyanese President) Unilaterally appoints a GECOM chairman in violation of the constitution and order to rig. His actions have been condemned across Guyana.

Truth:

President Jagdeo - All Elections free and fair.

President Rammo - All elections free and fair.

Fact: All elections under the Indo head of the GECOM mentioned under the PPP were free and fair.

Please do not being this BS argument that Indos were unfair or rigged. The record of PNC Presidents speak for itself.

Django, why did you leave out Edward Hopkinson, GECOM Chairman 1994-1995? He was not Indian and he was a gold miner not a judge. Hoyte had submitted his name and Jagan's PPP government appointed him.

I am wondering about your sincerity in backing me and Mitwah against Granger's high-handed action.

Furthermore, Gocool Boodhoo was never GECOM Chairman. Joe Singh was.

Let us not forget Rudy Collins. He was nominated by Dr. Japan and appointed by President Hoyte. This is not about an Indo versus an Afro Chairman. This is about the constitution and the spirit of the Carter formula . The Guyanese people MUST have the last say. Long Live Democracy.

Since the Carter formula was implemented prior to the 1992 elections and subsequently enshrined in the constitution, there have been no prior instances of a President having found the list submitted him to have been unacceptable. We are therefore now in unchartered territory as a nation.

In 1991, then Opposition Leader Dr. Cheddi Jagan submitted the following list to then President Desmond Hoyte.

1. Ambassador Rudy Collins
2. Jules DeCambra
3. Joey King
4. Edward Luckhoo
5. Bryn Pollard
6. David Yankana

Ambassador Rudy Collins was named GECOM Chairman by President Hoyte.

In 1995 when the tables had turned the then Opposition Leader Hoyte submitted the following list to then President Dr. Jagan.

1. Justice Rudolph Harper
2. Edward Hopkinson
3. Randolph Kirton
4. Ambassador Charles Liburd
5. Justice James Patterson
6. Doodnauth Singh

Mr. Singh was nominated by Dr. Jagan and sworn in as GECOM Chairman.

In 2000, Mr. Hoyte once again submitted a list to Mr. Jagdeo who had been elevated to the presidency. This list was as follows:

1. Prof. Dennis Craig
2. Harold Davis
3. Dr. Gem Fletcher
4. Brig. David Granger
5. Justice Rudolph Harper
6. Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Joe Singh

Maj. Gen. Singh was named as GECOM Chairman by Mr. Jagdeo.

After the resignation of Maj. Gen. Singh following the March 2001 elections, Opposition Leader Hoyte submitted another list to then President Jagdeo.

This list was identical to the one previously submitted, save for one change – Maj. Gen. Singh’s name was replaced by Dr. Steve Surujbally who was appointed GECOM Chairman by then President Jagdeo.

1. Prof. Dennis Craig
2. Harold Davis
3. Dr. Gem Fletcher
4. Brig. David Granger
5. Justice Rudolph Harper
6. Dr. Steve Surujbally

Justice Harper, a former Chief Justice, puisne judge and Justice of Appeal, features on all three lists submitted by Mr. Hoyte.

In 1991, the list submitted by Dr. Jagan included attorneys-at-law Edward Luckhoo, Bryn Pollard (who is also a former Chief Parliamentary Counsel) and Joey King.

Ok guys my bad, found the correct info, dunno how the heck Boodhoo came to mind,it was not intentional to mislead any one.

Anyway since 1991,GECOM had 3 Indo Guyanese.

Regarding whether Doodnauth Singh was more fit and proper that James Patterson, has anyone ever saw Doodnauth Singh try to use the wrong end of a pen?

That was 1995,Patterson probably more fit.

How then is Patterson NOW fit for such a demanding job? Perhaps Granger already knows that as long as Patterson arthritis doesn't act up, he should still be able to hold the rubber stamp.

From 1995 three Indos were nominated, maybe Old man Granger balancing the appointments with his own choice, don't seem to have confidence in the Afro Guyanese on the list the opposition Leader submitted.

The fact still remains that the PPP never unilaterally appoint the Chairman like Granger did the first opportunity he had. It reeks of old style PNC wickedness.

Three Indos were nominated while the PPP were in power and they were all selected by the PPP. Jagdeo knew that Granger would only accept one of his own just as the PPP did when it was their turn so he padded the list with ridiculous choices. So who should Granger have selected from this first list?

1. Ramesh Dookhoo
2. Lawrence Latchmansingh
3. Maj. Gen. Rtd Norman McLean
4. Christopher Ram
5. Prof. James Rose
6. Rhyaan Shaw

Of course this confirms that Rohee was correct when he agreed with Jagdeo that the PPP is the "coolie people party". They think that only Indians are "fit and proper".

The PNC submitted names.  The PPP consistently selected the Indian ones.

In the opinion of the PPP "only Indians are fit and proper".

We have yet to see evidence that the majority of Indo Guyanese don't agree with this.  They REFUSE to discuss the subject of Indian racism and harass the few Indians who are willing to do this. They pursue a narrative that all that ails Guyanese ethnic relations lie at the feet of Afro Guyanese.

In fact your post concretizes this view that many non Indians have of Indians.
