GCF team off to Pan-American Road Cycling Championship

The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) will be represented at this weekend’s 32nd Pan-American Road Cycling Championships set for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, May 4-7 at the Mirador Sur Park.
Leading Guyana’s charge for medals in the Under-23 segment of this prestigious championship, which has attracted participation from 25 nations and more than 200 riders, will be Andrew Hicks of United We Stand Cycle Club. Initially, the GCF had also named Hicks’ club mate Raphael Leung and Kaieteur Cycle Club’s Dwayne Gibbs Jnr. as part of the team but the latter two will not be competing.
The hottest rider on the local circuit so far this season, Team Coco’s Jamal John will lead the charge for medals in the Elite category of the race along with club mates Hamza Eastman and Junior Niles as well as Paul DeNobrega (Digicel/Ginseng Team Evolution).
GCF President Horace Burrowes and Assistant Racing Secretary Joseph Britton are the officials that will be accompanying the team. Eastman left Guyana one week ago for Anguilla where he competed and won a road race there, he will join the team in the Dominican Republic.
The Under-23 category road race, a 140Km battle, will be held on Saturday while the Elite race, a 170Km clash, is set for Sunday. There will also be individual Time Trials for males and females but the Guyanese would not be participating.
The countries confirmed to compete are Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.
