Funeral home at Suddie goes down again

MARCH 21, 2012 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

For the past six weeks, the Suddie Funeral Parlor on the Essequibo Coast has been out of operation as a result of technical problems.

The funeral parlor in Suddie, Essequibo Coast, has been down for six weeks now.

While reports are varying, this newspaper understands that the problem lies specifically with the freezing compartment. Bodies are being taken instead to the Oscar Joseph Mortuary at Charity where families are reportedly being asked to provide ice to keep their loved ones.

This newspaper understands that at Charity, the facility has a capacity to house four bodies at a time, while at the Suddie Funeral Home, there is space for six. Essequibo’s Alliance For Change (AFC) Councillor, Archie Cordis, is insisting that the existing problems at the Suddie Funeral Parlor should never have been kept a “secret” from the public.

According to Cordis, the public has a right to know whether the parlor has a problem and the nature of the problem. He said that the situation is forcing families to incur additional costs, especially those that live on the southern side of the Coast. “The Minister of Health should make reservation for an alternative freezer at Suddie Funeral Parlor.”

He also called for an urgent upgrade of the Suddie Hospital. Over the years, the facility had been facing similar problems and in one instance bodies have been known to go bad because of problems with the freezers.
