Fullbore Captain Persaud leads Team WI to Junior Mackinnon Trophy at Bisley

Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud returned from Bisley, England yesterday after participating in the 148th Imperial Meet which was contested from June 16 to July 22.
The various competitions over the period ranged from Schools Cadet, Match Rifle, Historical Arms, F-Class and Target Rifle which lasted July 14-18.
The Grand Aggregate was on by Mr. CJ Watson with a score of 698.105Vs, obtaining the DCRA Challenge Shield, The NRA Gold Cross, a Gold bar and Β£200 followed by Mr. P. Patel with a score of 698.102Vs, obtaining the NRA silver Cross, a Silver bar and Β£200.
Third was Mr. RSF Shouler who obtained an NRA Bronze Cross, a Bronze bar and Β£175. Persaud shot a commendable score of 669.64Vs to end in 351st place, just 30 points behind the winner underscoring the level of the completion and the number of persons who had similar scores; this year’s competition attracted 729 shooters.
Meanwhile, four West Indians also participated in a four member team shoot for the Junior Mckinnon Trophy which the Caribbean side won under the Captaincy of Trinidad and Tobago’s Norris Gomez.
The team shot a score of 268.25vs, having shot 192.19Vs at 900 yards and 176.6Vs at the 1000 yards range.
Persaud led the team with 95.8Vs at the two ranges, followed by Gomez 94.9Vs, St. Vincent & the Grenadines’ Chalky White 93.4Vs and T&T’s Caroline Gomez 86.4Vs. Adjutant (Manager) was T&T’s Gaby Gomez.
Persaud in an invited comment said that conditions at Bisley were very windy and seeing was not great at times. Persaud also noted that he was trying out a new rifle and is still getting accustomed to it.
The West Indies team had also won this trophy in 2013 when the team was captained by Gomez and included Persaud, Guyanese Sigmund Douglas, T&T’s D, Rajnauth and Jamaica’s D. Rickman. Major John Nelson (Jamaica) was Captain with coaching duties performed by L. Johnson. The winning score then was 377.31Vs.
And, Messrs Persaud and Lennox Braithwaite will soon be leaving for Canada to participate in the Canadian National Shooting Championships which will be the inaugural multi-discipline championships for rifle, shotgun and pistol sections to be held in Cookstown at the new Pan American range.
According to the GuyanaNRA, these championships form part of their preparation for the Commonwealth Games next February in Australia.
