For Jagdeo, a PPP victory would herald a further five years of unbridled lust for power

APRIL 12, 2015 | BY  | FILED UNDER LETTERS

Dear Editor,
Bharat Jagdeo remains the luckiest man in the history of Guyana. Plucked from obscurity by the Jagans, this man has overseen the most corrupt and venal regime in the history of the English-speaking Caribbean and has emerged even more powerful than at any time during his official presidential reign.  He desecrated the sacred Hindu marriage vows and for that and for his vindictive treatment towards his β€œwife” he should have been hounded out of office. Instead thanks to the servile and craven nature of the party’s core supporters this modern-day Caesar has grown and continued to feed on that meat which makes him so great.
The media, the opposition, even the foreign governments have given him a free pass on so many of his atrocities.  Now, in the latest campaign he has been a virtual unguided missile in his racist epithets and scurrilous remarks.  In his utter contempt for the Guyanese the man had the temerity to trash the legacy of his benefactors.  And not so much as a scent of protest came from Rohee, Ramotar, Luncheon, Teixeira, all of whom owe their very political life and good fortune to Cheddi and Janet.  Remarkably he is yet to face a debate and will probably leave public life without so much as a mea culpa.
This election is entirely about Jagdeo.  A victory would cement his legacy and herald a further 5 years of unbridled lust for power and fortune.  The spoils of victory would redound incredibly to the Jagdeo faction with a smattering of crumbs to their loyal supporters.  Defeat and Jagdeo would be banished forever from the annals of the PPP, blasted back to the obscurity to which he richly deserves and justifiably derided as the single solitary reason for the PPP’s ejection from power.   His fate, and that of the nation lies, literally, in the hands of the people.

Mr Jagdeo is a very smart and intelligent individual. He has proved that he can calculate,  influence and charm  people to come  to his camp.

In his political career every move is a chess move.  He manipulated and successfully  destroyed all his opponents at Freedom House, sent those who felt was a threat packing, then establishing himself  as king pin.

He then took on the powerful PNC, he transformed  the powerful fiery opposition leader Mr Corbin into a lamb. He created the phantom squad to instill fear both to opponents and anyone who think they can mess a head of state. As leader of the nation he made waves   in the international arena successfully placing himself as a champion for saving the earth.

Back at home he ensured that contracts and other money making enterprises was shared to his friends. Today that is paying dividends to Mr Jagdeo.Just like the late President Burnham, Mr Jagdeo surrounds himself with some very intelligent people thus ensuring that he can stay in control. Over the years he stayed close to the head of many of the leading religious organizations, today that as well is paying dividends. He used the Guyana constitution like ifit was written just for him. He ensure that he is set for life with a pension that few head of states from Carricom can ever dream of.  He planted an operative from Freedom House to every foreign Guyana Embassy and Consulate thus ensuring that he has first hand knowledge of what's taking place and today that as well is paying dividends.

All the above traits proved victorious for past and present leaders such as Mr Putin and Forbes Burnham, etc, etc.

On May 11th it is not about the  political party the PPP  , it is more of a win or a loose for President Bharat Jagdeo.

Let's see how it will play out.

Chief

On Friday President Jagdeo was at IMO  THE LARGEST Guyanese  Mosque in Toronto wooing the worshipers. On Saturday morning he was at a press conference expressing surprise that the opposition is condemning the amount of youths on the PPP list whilst they only have old people. Later the same evening President Jagdeo was in New York addressing a hugh crowd of supporters telling them why they should continue to back the PPP.

This is his election to win, the man is campaigning like Bill Clinton.

Then, I would suppose, those in the Mosques, Mandirs and large gathering are part and parcel of the unrighteous deeds of Jagdeo.

Maybe, they doan know right from wrong. Or Good from Evil.

Maybe, their pleasure is the displeasure of Amerinds and the other races.

Maybe, they endorse the death of a nation from a Foreign Place.

Maybe, dey burning the bridges back to Guyana.

Maybe, dey is all bigots.

My intent is to alert the opposition.

For the longest I have been screaming my lungs out that President Jagdeo is using The Hon Forbes Burnham playbook.

And the Kabaka was no easy man he outwitted his political opponents until his death.

And who he ain't outwit he killed.

Don't know that Chief is slobbering wet kisses.  Do know that he is acknowledging a fact, and that is Jagdeo is an evil genius in the same way that Burnham was, of knowing exactly how to manipulate people in Guyana to achieve his goals.

Only difference is that Jagdeo is crude and lacks Burnham's charm, sophistication and eloquence.  But competent practitioners of the Machiavellian evil they both are.

So the opposition has opened the debate to the past. We can freely speak about the PNC. Okay.

Is the coalition planning to win on the ignorance of our youth?

Dear Editor,

The idea being advanced by the coalition parties, APNU and the AFC, that voters must forget the past when making their decision at the polls is unfortunate. The AFC hopes that since our young people know nothing about the past and are therefore not burdened by it they will vote for the coalition.

If our youth know nothing of their history shouldn’t these supposedly responsible coalition leaders educate them, inform them and tell them about it? Is the coalition planning to win on the ignorance of our youth? Are they banking on it?

Why does the coalition not want young people to know about the past? Are they ashamed, guilty, or afraid of being unmasked as something they are not?

If youthful ignorance is being praised by the coalition one wonders what kind of education our children will receive should they win. A revisionist history of events? A blank of so many years because some want us to forget?

History matters. Writers and philosophers have said it in so many ways that not knowing your history, or willfully forgetting it leaves you rudderless and directionless, and could condemn you to repeating the mistakes of the past. It is from experience that we know what works and what should be corrected or abolished.

Because none of the parties is giving a clear vision of the future it has in mind, we have no alternative but to evaluate them from their past record. Who kept promises? Who subverted justice? Who condoned corruption? Who killed and who justified the killings? The list is long and the sad state of affairs is that no one side comes out unscathed. This is why it is especially important for young voters to know all of the history if they are to make an informed choice at the polls.

It is an especially difficult choice. One side fears a return to Burnhamism and the other a continuation of Jagdeoism. Most voters see it as a choice between two evils and since Indian Guyanese will see one party as the lesser evil and African Guyanese another, by and large, race-based voting will continue.

What a boon it would have been had just one party admitted to mistakes made in the past and given assurances that there would be no such recurrence. What a missed opportunity for true greatness to have put all of Guyana first and leave partisanship behind.

But we have no such leaders. We only have petty politicians and grubby, little opportunists. There is not a single statesman among the lot of them. Who is to blame for this sorry state of affairs, them or us?

I fear it is us as I watch thousands jig themselves merrily to nonsensical campaign messages including ones that tell us that our future lies in forgetting the past.

Given this sad state of affairs, Guyana will continue to lose no matter who wins at the polls.

 Yours faithfully,

Ryhaan Shah
